I just got back from two weeks vacation in the US. (I'm an American living and working in Japan.) Do you know what I noticed most, besides the brush fires in LA? Fat.

Americans are huge! They are really really fat. I never really noticed how fat Americans were until I spent a couple of years abroad. Just walking around the shopping malls I was amazed to see people with fat overflowing out of their clothes.

OK, it may not seem like a big deal, but I don't think I've ever truely noticed this before.

Yep, I guess the largest guys I saw were in the US. Huge is the word... and there were many of them!

Yes I would say you are correct. People here love to eat, and love to eat fast food. The lack of working out/eating bad has made american the way it is now.

I'll have to say you are generalizing way too much. If I were to post such generalized comments about other countries, I am sure the topic would be locked quickly.

it's actually not a generalization. Studies show that per capita, the U.S. is the most overweight country in the world.

I think meal size has a lot to do with it as well. I was surprised at just how much food you got for such a cheap price. And the "upsize" offers are even better than Australia now THAT is a good effort.

every culture has something unique about them. my constant travels around the world has demonstrated that to me. not sure what the purpose of this thread is though. besides Americans being large, what are we to gain from your observation? don't mean to sound rude, but this surely is an odd topic.

I lived in China for three years and when I returned to the US a couple of years I made the same observation - it was really odd! So, I completely understand what you went through. I also thought Canadians, Australians, British people, and most Westerners were fat as well.

I then gained 30 pounds upon my return - practically the instant I set foot on the tarmac! I lost it because I now work out everyday for the past year and a half, but it reminded me to watch what I eat. We don't need to exercise in the States (and other Western countries) whereas in Asia, people don't go to the gym because they don't need to - their diet and the daily routine of walking , riding a bike, or manual labor burns off the calories they consume. But, the cities in China are changing - they've got lots of fat people now. They're not laughing at Westerners anymore.

Have you ever noticed that most Asian countries have really small people? Pointless info huh?

LOL @ dayve .. or that American chocolate "tastes funny" ... isn't all chocolate sugar-free over there ?

Don't worry dayve, I'm much the same as you - I've travelled enough to appreciate quite a few different cultures and understand their differences. To me it's more jsut observations than anything malicious.

Sugar free chocolate? What kind of twisted culture do you think we live in over here?

LOL ... I heard a story a long time ago, maybe it was skim-milk based (sugar free doesn't sound right anyway). It was related to reducing obesity anyway.

No real point I guess. I just had to say something about it.

Then again, maybe it's a realization that one particular point in the American way of life needs reconsideration.

I don't know about you, but I'm sure that my parents' diet isn't doing their health any good. I'm pretty sure that they're not alone in that either.

I used to say that too when I first visited Japan ten years ago. I'm 6 ft and the door jams always smacked you in the head. The counters are really low. You have to take off your shoes where ever you go and the slippers they give you in place of the shoes are always too small.

But I've got to say that a hell of a lot more of the teenagers are at eye level with me now...

All you have to do is follow the horde of wide, waddling posteriors through a shopping-cart traffic jam like at, say Costco. It's quite a view
