Yet again...
I'm sure you all know the drill.

I got an email about it from Microsoft and ran WindowsUpdate right away, and by the time I had started downloading I got the balloon to tell there were updates ready to install. |

Uhmm.. Microsoft doesn't send emails. Better be careful about those. |

Actually Microsoft does send emails. When I get home I'll see if I can get online and post the link. |

Not everyone uses automatic updates for various reasons.
It's just that it seems like I did this a week ago. Personally I don't mind. I look at it as part of using computers, being online, etc. The people I feel bad for are the people who don't know much about computers, don't know what patches are and how to apply them. When they get hacked or their computer gets messed up, they get fustrated. They hear about viruses and patches on the news, don't know how to protect themselves. How fustrating that must be.
I'm not faulting Microsoft for this. It's really up to the user to learn the basics of using a computer. It's not really a good analogy, but I don't recall anyone from Ford, Chevy or GM instructing me how to drive a car.
Something I find interesting is that I have both a PC and a Mac on my desk at work. I can't recall having to install any patches on that Mac in the past couple of years. But I also don't go looking for them.
Here's my final thought on this...
The only patches I look forward to are computer game patches.

Yep, they do. In fact I received one yesterday about patches for Exchange.
The past couple of weeks though it has been a pain looking for the legit ones.
Here's the link to signup: http://www.microsoft.com/security/security_bulletins/alerts.asp

The button is right on the Security & Privacy homepage.

Thanks WM, I won't be home for a couple more hours, and I'm sure that when I get home I'll have forgotten about posting the link. Now I can forget it and not feel bad about it later |
