I'm working on three websites right now, two for myself and one for a friend. In itself that's nothing worth writing about, but I have a huge problem; every design I make looks bad (at least IMO). I've tried looking at some template sites, but the templates are either to technical for the sites I'm working on, or they're too plain.
Where do you get your inspiration?
Oh, and another question... What do you do when you have a client who wants a website but doesn't know or tell what it is he/she wants the site to look like? I've asked for a few links to sites that he likes and dislikes, but they were all rather ... uhhmmm how shall I put this... well they looked like crap, the kind that when you see them you start to feel sick, and when you see it's a company's site you can't help but laugh. |

my advice is KIS. Keep It Simple start of with the color-scheme, and build it up from there.
My design took me 3 weeks to finalize, and more than 10 hours of colorscheme-comparisons....and I still hate it. That's why you mustn't be your own judge and executioner ; ask someone else for feedback. They look at it differently, and unbiased.
Toptips:
- Don't use templates
- Do use a storyboard
- Don't be afraid to go a different direction!
- Do use your full imagination
- Don't copy!
- Do research to your clients wishes (for instance, analyze the decoration of the company/house, and mimick it with the website. A man's clothes tell a lot about his style!)
Hope it helps. |

I think these are good advices Frutzle, and I agree. When I make sites I also use alot of time comparing colors, normally I would choose 3-4 colors that match each other and reuse these colors all over the site, this usually make the site look as a whole design. Also I try to make my designs look different than others, but for me this isn't a problem because I'm not a educated programmer so it always turns out diferently than others (my luck). But basically I think that a lot of webdesigners tend to overfill the sites with alot of useless stuff, keep it simply MUST be the best advise, and also the menu itself has alot to say 'bout the site so I usually spend alot of time making my menues *SS*.
Hope it helps *S* |

I know how to get color schemes, that's not the problem at all. It's the look that keeps bugging me. Marcel's probably right about not judging my own work.
For now I'll just take a break and give it a fresh new try in a few days. |
