I've decided to make a more definite step toward table-less design.

Having discovered the CSS 'float' property, I've discovered the ability to have two divs (enclosed in a wrapper div) side-by-side - one aligned to the left, the other to the right.

I've found that the wrapper div (which has some border/background effects), behaves oddly and the floated div's seem to jump out - causing the wrapper div to vetically squash?

If these words make no sense, take a look at this page I'm working on - it's the forum link and pages links at the bottom of the center column.

in addition, this page shows a tabled version and (ideally) how it should look.

Thats been my trouble with tableless design. Its so much easier to use tables that I often question - why bother?

Seperating style/layout from content is starting to appeal to me more and more these days and it also seems to be the basis of XML-based technologies (XSL/XSLT/XML/SOAP etc.) that I'll need to learn someday anyway.

D3mon - friendly color set, and nice blending of the Google Ads (I'm going to assume you have a nice CTR)...

anyway, if you ever wanted to put that back up on another page (the CSS attempt), I can try and take a look at it for you. I've done quite a few CSS things now, and would at least give a shot at trying to see what went wrong.

OK thanks,

Here is the table-driven version. Note at the bottom of the center column, the textual forum link and the 'page' icons.

I recreated the CSS version on this page. I've added blue borders to the floated div's for reference purposes.

If you examine the source code, you'll see that I have discovered the clear:both fix to make the green box fit correctly around the floated content (instead of squashing upwards), but I was left with some strange no-wrap related problems when resizing the display to quite small sizes...

Won't be able to look until tonight (my tonight, in about 6-8 hours). Although, I did have a problem downloading the style sheets from here, I think it's just this machine's quirkiness.

VF: OK, no problem. It might be slight different looking now as I cant resist playing with it, but you'll probably see the problems I'm having...

BRUJO: Hey Thanks! We've got Snitz forums of course!

Gotta hit the sack, but essentially I still need to try and work out some method of replacing the tables that I have used in the central 'content' area of the pages for CSS-based methods.

I've been trying to work it by floating things left and right, but always find the CSS Clear property to be rather unpredictable when resizing the display in various different browsers.

Am I missing an obvious method of doing this?

Nope, I found CSS layouts to be too unpredictable. Maybe some day, when browser catch up, it will work...
