I've downlaoded the trial version and looked it over...its more complicated than I thought it would be. Does anyone know of any good online material that would help me understand Dreamweaver better? |

I remember the first time I looked at it, too. It seemed really complicated, but I got used to it pretty quickly.
Try looking through the help files. There's a lot of information in there. |

Something that might also help is if you download a few of the free Dreamweaver templates you can find by doing a google. Some might be a bit difficult to understand, but they might give you some insight in the possibilities of Dreamweaver. Also take a look at http://www.macromedia.com/support/dreamweaver/ts/documents/dream_websites.htm for links to Dreamweaver related websites |

If you're thinking about buying, you might want to wait a bit till the new version is released (although sometimes they give you a free upgrade). Click here to read about it. |

Thanks Frutzle, I'll check out some of those sites when I get a chance.
Testmagic-I'll prolly wait until the new version comes out, I'm not in a big hurry or anything, and it'll give me more time to read up on using Dreamweaver

silent_frosty, your book's in the mail. I sent it Media Mail, so it won't be as fast as first class.
Hope you get some use out of it! |

Dreamweaver has nothing to do with php. It helps to know some HTML though. |

That's complete BS IMO. It's a WYSIWYG editor, so no knowledge of any languages, be it HTML, PHP, VBScript or CF, is necessary as long as you know how to drag and drop and think logically (that's where things usually go wrong with me).

"People" say a lot of things. For instance, I say that Adobe has a name, but quite undeserved if you realize that they charge a lot for the basic programs and then you also have to buy plug-ins to get functionality that cheaper programs offer by default.
Don't judge until you've tried it yourself. Besides, in the reviews I've read, Dreamweaver always gets higher scores than GoLive. |

I've been using Dreamweaver for a few years now, not as intuitive as FrontPage but not impossible. My only training has been a lot of reading and a lot of forum reading, here and the Macromedia forums have been an enormous help. I am fortunate that work bought it for me, and it is the education version, either way it cost me nothing.
I started with simple HTML pages and have slowly progressed to using it to develop a hopeful commercial site using cold fusion and a SQL database. It's slow going, I learn as go, but I love doing it.
Dreamweaver will build a lot of the database interfaces for you, but it adds a ton of java script when it does, so I usually just make the pages on my own.
I agree and disagree with the php / other languages statements. I am using an older version, 4.0 and it doesn't "support" php. Essentially what it will do for you is allow you to simply add forms and form elements, rollover images, and many other features that might be hard for novices to code on their own at first. Where it helps with the particular language is it color codes the tags and lets you know if you forget to close a function. I use cold fusion and most every tag has a beginning and end, it seems I almost always forget to close one of my if statements when I have many of them grouped together. It might not tell me where it goes to close it, but it hight lights the last unclosed on. It is also a big help with writing queries. I have two sites, one at work using an Access database and the commercial site using SQL. Now I just need to learn about stored procedures. If Dreamweaver could write those for me it would sure save a ton of reading / researching.
If you really like it, enjoy learning about it. As a novice without any training except for help from here, it has been a real pleasure and big thrill when things go right.
Good luck. |

It's true that Dreamweaver can't do everything, but my comment was meant to say that you don't need to know any PHP or ASP to get started with Dreamweaver and dynamic pages. I never used Dreamweaver UltraDev, so I can't say how big the improvements are with MX compared to DWUD. I did however make a very simple ASP address book using an Access database in a few hours using Dreamweaver MX. Once I figured out how to do it it was rather simple, but getting to the point of understanding things took a long time since I didn't read the manuals and probably had my expectations set too high |
