Is it possible to get the exact location (state) of an AOL user? They all seem to come from Virginia, must be a main route.

There are services which actually have the real locations of the servers.

http://www.maxmind.com/

It's pretty good, I demo'd their country/state edition.

it is sometimes impossible to trace users like AOL members because the proxy servers do not have to be in the same geographical location as the person visiting your site.

You will have a very hard time tracking any aol user that uses their 800# dialup, as I did on a recent trip. In fact without AOL's help I doubt you can accurately determine any aol user's location.

Their network is big enough it's hard to say where the server may be on a dialup connection, for all I know the California local number I dial rings in Virginia rather than here in California. I'm sure they don't have different servers at every dialup number they offer throughout the world.

Actually they most likely do. I used the website I listed above and tried approximately 20 AOL IPs of users I know use AOL. Nailed which state/province all 20 were located in.

(side-note: I tested this out a lot because of possibly adding geotargetted ads to my site)
