When people forge your e-mail address into e-mails that they send out so that it looks like it came from you?

Especially when there are so many virus laden e-mails going around...

I've been getting a lot of e-mails from postmaster@xxx.xxx saying that I have a virus in my e-mails, then when I look at the headers they send me, those e-mails were sent using Outlook Express (which I don't use), and the IP address isn't mine either.

Oh well...

I've been getting way more e-mails with the W32/Sobig.F@mm virus in it than anything else. I just set up Outlook to automatically delete any e-mail with an attachment, that should take care of most of them...

I've only had that happen twice since I got my own domains, so maybe I should consider myself lucky. I've gotten a few virus emails the last couple days, but since Norton's kept up-to-date and removes them, I'm not too worried about it. I will make a backup of my system tonight though... just to be on the safe side.

I don't have those problems with my email accounts except my hotmail account (my first email account ever), I get about 50-90 emails per day and about 1 or 2 per week that aren't spam and that I actually read.

I've been lucky, we are on a big network here and some coworkers have received a lot of them, so far none for me.

This is something I've wondered about for a while. What is the purpose of such viruses? Just to say you can do it? I can't see the point. I would suspect it takes a rather talented programmer to write one and there is absolutely nothing to gain, or is there?

Just curious.

I'd suspect it's all done for fame, status and the ability to say "I was responsible for all the damages caused by virus X"

It doesn't matter why they do it, there's nothing to justify such sick behavior.

Yeah, I have many problems with spam mails on my domains - itīs really hard to do anything about it, I donīt use Outlook, only webmail, so spam filters canīt be used, which may be the only solution to this.

this virus is easy, since the subject lines are all the same, I just blocked them on the server side.

You are obviously not getting hammeed y it then, because the subject lines are not all the same, and some are perfectly valid as a subject line in a normal mail, so you may actually be deleting valid email from your account

It's the body text that's all the same--I saw only two variations. I set up a filter at the domain level to filter out all mail with the first line of body text that says "please see attached file for details."

I was getting hundreds of emails on Tuesday and had to take quick action. But I'm still getting tons of confirmation emails or bounces for emails that I never sent.
