I took the car in for some repairs this morning. Along with the usual tune-up, I had to get some brake work done and replace a wheel bearing (ouch). When I received the quote for parts and labor, I couldn't believe it -- well I could, but they sure do get a good chunk of money for labor.

While I was waiting, I was reading the latest issue of COMPUTERWORLD. I was reading about the concern about IT jobs being outsourced to countries like India and Singapore. Another article stated that Gartner Inc. predicts that 1 out of 20 corporate IT jobs in the US will be moved offshore, along with 10% of the positions at US based IT vendors and technology services firms.

When they told me they expected it to take 3 hours, they offered to give me a ride back to my work (I was less then .5 away). One of the mechanics pulls up in a BMW.

It was then that I thought, maybe I'm in the wrong industry.

I made the comment to the guy that he had a nice car and said that I think I'm in the wrong industry. He laughed and said it's only good if you like long hours. I thought -- I work long hours too and I don't drive a BMW.

Seriously though, mechanics don't have to worry about their jobs being outsourced or being sent overseas. Nobody is going to send their automobile overseas for repairs. People can't wait to have their cars fixed -- they're a necessity. As far as money, no maybe they are not making six digit incomes, but neither am I. Mechanics make decent money and I'm sure it's a steady reliable income. When it comes to their own cars, they can save on labor by fixing their own cars. Wow, I can fix my own computer.

Hmm...car parts cost more than computer parts.

I think I better start taking classes and get ASE certified.

lmao... my bother wants to become a mechanic. Or at least last time I heard. He's also wanted to do something with body work instead of engines. My sister doesn't approve of it, but if I'd been a bit more interested in cars and less clumsy with tools I might've become a mechanic myself too.
It has its benefits, although being dirty and smelling like you bathed in oil and grease aren't my thing

But you forgot the most important part about any job - whether the income is good, the hours are great, and the fringe benefits arousing - you HAVE to ENJOY it. Don't get me wrong, if you don't make the "right" amount of money then you will not like yor job, but if you're making GREAT money and hate the job - thats misery!!! Do what you love and find a way to make money in that field.

snaayk is absolutely correct! If you have to "work" for a living something is wrong :)

Someone once told me that the crane operators at the Port of Long Beach (one of the busiest in California) made $100K a year and worked 4 days a week. Unionized of course.

It goes to what snaayk said, I guess. That's nice money, but I don't want to move large boxes around for 20+ years. Besides, it looks like a job that will get replaced by robots in a few years.
