I'm looking for a freeware utility that allows me to create animated gifs (I want to do banner/button).

Most important is - quick and easy to do. (I'm actually bad at graphic editing/creating, so a very simple program would do it.)

Any recommendations?

I don't know any free programs off the top, but there are some. Check tucows maybe?

That's the problem, I've checked several download sites that include user reviews, but those "reviews" are useless;
and I don't want to try them all just to find a simple and efficient one.

From what I understand you want some freeware program, so a trial version of, say, Fireworks MX won't do?

Don't want to use any trial software, but thanks for the hint.
I've used Fireworks (1.0!!!) until a few months ago; haven't created any graphics since then.
I use Xnview for very basic conversion/editing/viewing, it does the job I want it to.

I think I'll go with Gimp (http:/www.gimp.org/), quite nice, will have to test its gif creation abilities.
BTW - everyone's still welcome to post other recommended software - just for the case...

Well, I'm not sure if this helps, but I used Paint Shop Pro a few times to make some simple animated banners. It worked okay, and had some nice animation wizards built in.

Yeah, I know it's trial software, but the trial period is pretty long, something like 60 or 90 days--the program seems to keep working up to a certain point, then just stops.

Yeah I was going to mention Animation Shop 2, that comes with Paint Shop Pro. I didn't know anything about making animated gifs until I tried that program. It was pretty easy and straight forward to use.

I've plaid with Ulead Gif Animator before to play with... has some "decent" filters and easy to understand interface. Its not free though:

I quickly whipped up these using that program:
