Just bought my wife a 20gig Windows IPOD and this thing is beautiful. However, since it is a Windows version all you get is a plugin for the device to work with MusicMatch. It works just fine and man is it FAST using the Firewire. Anyway, the thing I dislike about it a lot is that you must maintain a music library with MusicMatch in order to keep everything synchronized properly. If you accidentally lose your library or delete things from your library then it deletes the music from your IPOD. This is very frustrating especially if you have sync on startup enabled.
I knew there had to be a better solution and sure enough there was. So now I move on to the recommendation phase of this post and suggest that anyone using or planning on getting a Windows edition IPOD to use a file mover called XPlay which is only 29 bucks and well worth the money. It offers drag and drop for your music files and is extremely intuitive. This application can be found here:

I didn't realize that MusicMatch had that capability. I use MM all the time and think it's great for listening to my music. If you haven't used the program much, I'd recommend giving it one more chance. However, you just spent $29 so you're probably all set with what you want and won't give MM a second look. Thanks for the info! |

I think the version of MusicMatch that come with the iPOD is different from the retail version.
Dayve, how much did the iPOD cost you? I've been drooling over them for ages, but the price has always been so high that I got nosebleeds

I have a friend that works at a computer store in LA and he sold me the 20 gig version for 350... no tax either.
I have MusicMatch Pro and its not the fact that the software was the retail version, it is simply the fact that you have to maintain a library in order to sync with the IPOD. If you accidentally lose your library it will delete your IPOD files.
The XPlay software is awesome because it is drag and drop. Just like opening up a folder. The IPOD allows for it to be used as a Hard Drive, but without this software you could NOT do that with music, IPOD would not recognize it, but XPlay makes it work just that way. Its a really simple and nice piece of software that compliments the IPOD nicely. |

So, Dayve. Is the iPod really for your wife or do you plan to "borrow" it? |

nah, it is hers. she is pretty technical savvy herself, but I had to break it in and configure her computer for the last couple of days. but now I can't remove it from her grip, I feel that I will be asking for one for my b-day soon as well! |

hehe I can relate to that Dayve, the wife got a Sony MP3 player for a present late last year, that was I think $699 local currency. But its pretty sweet, they're a lot cheaper 6 months later though of course too heh, couldn't convince her to get an iPod said it was too big, which I guess when you compare with the Sony it is a fair bit bigger.

I used the Pro version with the Ipod plugin. Its not that I had a problem with it, its just that the program makes it more difficult than it should be... it should not remove songs that are not in your musicmatch library, you should be able to add and remove songs just as you would add and remove songs by dragging and dropping to a hard drive on your computer which is what XPlay does. XPlay is without a shadow of a doubt, the best Windows IPOD program, I personally guarantee it. |
