ahh, and make "default.asp" the default document so if someone goes to to /forum/ on your site they will get to the forum. |

the periods have been removed in the original post. Can someone explain how to turn off directory browsing in Windows 2000 Advanced Server?

The image url is still pointing to: d:/My%20Webs/internethelp/images/internethelpbanner.gif
to make default.asp a "default document": in the IIS snap-in right click on the site and go to the documents tab, add in "default.asp"
to turn off directory browsing: again in the IIS snap-in right click on the site and go to the home directory tab and uncheck "directory browsing"
all of that is from memory so it should be pretty close, but I may have my labels a little off by a bit. If you will be using IIS get used to using the snap-in, just about everything for it is controlled there.

on the 'Web Links' page you have a 'Close Window' link on the bottom... since it's not a popup, prolly not for that link to exist, don't want members/visitors clicking it and leaving your site |

By browsing to http://internethelp.no-ip.com/forum/ now brings up the forum instead of the directory as with Spy's help I added the default page via the IIS snap in as well as disabled directory browsing.
As for the banner not being displayed???....Is anyone else seeing this as this is the location for the banner...hey SPY...see if you can see the banner @ http://internethelp.no-ip.com . I had a few others test it and they are seeing the banner. Does anyone have any suggestions what may being causing this???

Ok, first I would do something to make your board ,your board. Like customize some colors. Get a kewl looking header in there. Don't just throw together a bunch of forums and say its a master peice. It takes time. And learning. You have to promo for you site too (like this was). First i would tell everyone in my neighbor hood. or friends and family about the site. Because when you do start getting traffic. Most people is shy. So they don't want to start posting to a empty board. So go thro and make 1 or 2 posts on your own. |

A great idea in suggesting to make a few posts myself in the forum in order to get people to post. We have just added the URL to some search engines and hopefully it will take off. While speaking of search engine submissions does anyone have any tips and tricks for this or software that will make it more sucessful?
As for changing the colors and adding a personal touch to the forum...We are new to all this code and am learning it gradually. WE plan on doing it in the near future and any suggestions as to what will make this forum more appealing would be greatly appreciated.
A side note as well....we have removed the login option to the forum so you can view it. As the forum is set up, you will have to register to post though. As we all know this is by default. |

Search engines normally take 6 to 8 weeks before they "spider" your site. Some will leave your forums immediately because the pages aren't static, others will spider everything and will be there for hours in a row (spidering only one page every few minutes). Other search engines let you "sign up" but don't do anything with that information (or they just take a couple years before they actually start working ).
Tricks to get higher rankings: make sure you have good content that people will want to read. If they want to read it, they'll send links to their friends and post links to your forums on other forums (or their own sites). That's pretty much it because search engines have gotten smarter and more often than not will ignore meta tags, or only use certain ones.
Changing the colors of your forums into something to make them look like something you made is a job only you can do. Right now it's pink and blue. If you want to stick with that, work something out. Do a search in the archives of the Graphics & Style forum. I believe I posted a tip on how to get a color scheme quite some time ago.
Other than this I won't say much because, as has been said in earlier replies, it's a basic install with a background image. |
