SQL is all new to me. I asked my ISP about SQL and the tech gave me his old evaulation CD for SQL 6.5 as he said he had no use for it anymore.
Sometime ago I "think" I remember a discussion here about the 180-day evaluation period actually lasting longer <- not too sure about that though.
Anyway, I went to www.microsoft.com/sql to research the service releases for SQL 6.5.
Question: If I have only an evaulation CD for SQL 6.5, can I somehow upgrade to SQL 7.0 and it's further releases? I want to see if my forum with its MODs will run at home on my PWS.
Thanks greatly for the help,
Etymon

You can use MSDE (which is a scaled down version of SQL Server 2000). You can download it from here:
http://www.asp.net/msde/default.aspx
or you may already have it. If you have Office 2000 or Office XP, it should be on your installation CD. |

That's the catch, I'm using Windows 98 SE. But, I will still bookmark that site and download the files.
Thanks Richard! |

MSDE will work fine on Windows 98 SE, I think you misread Office as Windows |

I think I did misread it.
Hmmm, what else?
Oh?! Are you familiar with whether or not I can upgrade from 6.5 to 7.0 from an evaulation CD? And if not that ... have you heard anything about the expiration of the evaluation period whether or not it is longer than 180 days? Just curious on that one. I'm a slow learner! LOL!

I would think that you could upgrade, but I'm not sure.
The connection tools (Enterprise Manager, Query Analyzer, etc.) were what was discussed as being immune to the 180 day evaluation period. SQL Server only works for the specified evaluation period.
MSDE is what I use at home to test SQL Server compatibility. It is supposed to be 100% compatible with SQL Server 2000. |

Oh, ok. *wheels turn*
I'm not ready to test on SQL, so it would probably be better for me to wait on it, right? ... Since I really don't even know what I should expect when I install it. I can just see me breaking out tons of readme files! LOL!

In rereading your other replies, I am wondering if I missed something.

Does this mean that with the link you sent me to I can use that particular MSDE on Windows 98 SE and it will work fine?

Oh, and don't bother with SQL 6.5 unless you absolutely have to. 6.5 is circa 1996 and difficult to work with.
