I've had it for a year or two. They pay quarterly, and they pay more when there is a direct link to a product, though they pay even if the buyer just entered through your site and ended up buying.
When I push it in my articles/new content, I get about $300 or $400 a quarter. When I don't push it and do nothing to call attention to their products, I get about $200 or $250 a quarter just from people going to my "book shelf."
I think it's worth it. |

| Sounds like it might be worth trying out, I've had some amazon links on one of my sites for about 5 months, but even though that site has a fairly large membership I don't think a single person clicked the links once lol. |

It also depends on where your visitors come from. Thanks to the lousy statistics software my host provides, I can only make guesses about my own site's visitors (and their numbers). But I know for a fact that most people from outside the US (especially Europe) won't want to buy their stuff at Amazon.com but rather at Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de or some other e-store in their own country. Unfortunately, if you have these kinds of visitors, you'll have to sign up for the afilliate programs on each of those sites seperately (even the Amazon sites don't share their Associates' information  ).
Since I started with the Amazon Associates links in the list of DVDs on my site, I've made exactly $0.00
Not that I counted on actually making any money from it, but it'd still have been nice to at least see something happening  |

Is your site very specialized? What kind of visitor numbers are you attracting to make that kind of revenue?
I've got mixed feelings on the associate program. On one hand, it would be nice to have any income from Amazon sales to cover the costs.
On the other hand, I'd like to do more than just recoup my costs if Amazon is going to make a buck on my work. It doesn't have to be a lot. Just something on the plus side. I don't want to wind up as the owner of a free labor niche site that only helps Amazon make money.
This of course assumes that my site COULD attract enough people to get revenue from Amazon.

Many of my visitors are not in the US, so that means they don't buy stuff from Amazon. Also, many of my visitors are from developing countries where US prices are quite high. That shouldn't be an issue in Japan, though, assuming you're targeting Japanese. |

Actually, I'm not targeting Japanese  However, your comment is quite relevant. One idea I had was to target students of Japanese, who could conveiveably come from anywhere. I'm not sure if this idea would fly given the work involved.

yes, it is a very specialized psychology site. I write articles on abuse and codependency, and those articles recommend reading for the reader. I don't really know how many visitors I get other than I know the site is popular and it comes up first or second in manyu search engines without my doing anything to push it.
The Snitz Forum helps site popularity big time, and while I'd love to set up an advice column on Snitz that also suggests further reading, I haven't. Maybe one day... |

I use it and find that the visitors of my site buy at Amazon more than any other affiliate I've set up. I run a niche music appreciation site so I've linked certain instructional books and videos.
One good thing about Amazon is that they pay 15% for books you link directly. That's a pretty good deal... otherwise you get around 5%. I don't get much money from it, but I never expected to make any money from my hobby site anyway. Any little bit helps me defray costs. If only I could get some of my time back! |

What other companies run affiliate programs? Barnes and Noble? Is it even worth the trouble?

Just about any company that sells stuff on the web has affiliate programs, it's just a matter of finding them.
You could join some affiliate programs to find out which companies have programs. Snitz has a bunch listed here:

I've tried a bunch of them, but I stick with cj.com (for their Half.com ads) and advertising.com.
However, you should know that they will not pay very well. I personally get more revenue from service ads (some are annoying--debt reduction, etc.) than I do from product-based ads, like Dell or Xerox. |

I've found the best reason to be with Commission Junction (CJ) is that they have hundreds (thousands?) of advertisers so you can usually find quite a few that will fit in with your site AND it doesn't matter if you only make a small amount of money from each because all moneys earnt from each advertiser are pooled into one account. This means that you can rack up a decent total quite quickly rather than waiting for ever to reach the payout level from individual advertisers. They also have great reporting too and can pay cheques in your currency, which can save you a lot depending on which bank you are at. They also do direct deposit but well, there's nothing like seeing that cheque in your hand, is there? |
