I've finally decided to go wireless in my house. I'm using a Linksys Wireless router (802.11b/2.4Ghz) but one of my computers running XP professional (pentium /// 750mhz) which is only 30 feet away keeps dropping connections between the other computers. I have a wireless usb nic on this machine and have tried to eliminate any anomolies that may interfere.
My question....
are usb wireless nic's really that reliable? should I have gone with an internal wireless nic in my pci slot? is there an issue of protocols between xp and 2000 server?
any ideas would be greatly appreciated. thanks. |

Well I don't use USB Nic's but I would find it weird if the they were unreliable. Maybe there is something faulty with the NIC, but I would doubt that it has anything to do with being USB. I guess you have more computers in your wireless network. Have you tried changing it to other computer?
Regarding the protocols question, what type of service are you using? File sharing? What? At home I have two XP computers (one Pro and one Home) and a Win2k Pro, and I have no problems connecting between them. |

I've heard of some issues with file/print sharing between XP and 2000 but nothing to confirm the issue I am having. I also had an existing dialup account in my network properties that would pop up when I lost connection to the router asking me to connect so I figured there might be a conflict with the dial up network connection which I immediately removed. Oddly enough, the problem has not gone completely away but has surely minimized.

I bought my whole Netgear setup at the Costco Business warehouse during a special event in which company reps were hawking their wares. I wanted to get a wireless PCI card and not a USB one, thinking it was more convenient without the extra cable, but they weren't selling them. The Netgear rep told me that they'd had problems with the PCI NIC's and didn't recommend them; she said they'd had much better luck with USB NIC's.
Sometimes the reception is odd--I experimented with various locations of the router, and ended up putting it on the second floor of my house; believe it or not, when it was on the first floor, i.e., between one machine in the basement and a couple machines on the second floor, all machines had poor connections. For some reason, when it's on the second floor, it works out better. |

Well my XP Pro machine is sharing my cable connection, thus working as DHCP server, and also as my printer sharing server. I have no problems printing from the Win2K or XP Home portables. Both portables have dialup connections defined, it does not raise any problems. I know this doesn't help much, but those possible causes for your problems surely do not affect me... |
