It looks like there might be some new competition to the ASP forum realm. Has anyone checked out MegaBBS? Some of the features include: flat/threaded/nested forums, active users, private messages, polls, calendar of events, avatars, photo album, files attachments, ban ip, quotes.

The looks of that forum are plain awful, but that's easy to get around. There are some really strange features, like the showing of the edit and delete buttons to guests.... The general idea it gave me was that it looked messy and would need a lot of work before I'd seriously consider using it. And that's time I'm not willing to waste to end up with a product of lesser quality than what I'm using now |

I actually thought the look was pretty nice but I have to agree that if someone is already using Snitz there definately would not be a reason to switch to this software.
Another thing to think about is the user/support base for Snitz is *FAR* greater then it is for MegaBBS. |

These guys seemed to have missed the class where they explained that every link should not be in icon or image. In general it's a fast site although the images seem to load slowly after the page itself is rendered and the way some aspects of it work like profiles leave a lot to be desired. I just wonder...why go to all the trouble of creating a forum like that if you are just duplicating functionality and style that already exists?

Looks like they took the bg bar on the category bar from Invisionboard.com! I know its kinda little darker, but looks very similar. |

The more ASP-based forums the better . I don't really understand what "powerful features of PHP boards" are though. A Board doesn't have to be PHP-based to have powerful features.
on another note, Microsoft is now using their own ASP.NET Forums on their XBOX site. |

After hanging around webhostingtalk lately, the subject of forums was brought up a couple of times. It seems they're a little biased toward Linux/PHP/mySQL, but interesting, someone did mention this forum which I hadn't heard of until now and I thought y'all might be interested.
From my initial impression, I thought it looked kind of pretty and fairly comprehensive, but just glancing at the code and database, I can see some improvements I'd make. I think I looks like a decent start though.

Not surprising. They're cheap compared to MS hosting options.

And we all know cheap is popular. Everyone wants something for nothing. It gets old after a while, but one of these days, the free rides will be over.

does that include snitz? it's free - should we/you/they start charging for it?
I think there will always be free rides as there will always be communities wanting to make cool stuff for free (or at least so I hope!) |

Oh, you noticed that too eh? When I was looking for a new host some time ago (before I went to Readyhosting) I was pointed to webhostingtalk and found that it was a (close to) 99% Unix-loving userbase. Now there's nothing wrong with Unix, PHP or MySQL, as I found out a while ago when I set up some phpBB forums for someone, but it's a useless site when you're looking for an ASP host.

My ISP uses infoPop forums on their site. The second I heard they'd "launched" those forums, I took a look and was absolutely shocked. I mean, they're a big company and obviously have no problem spending loads of money on their forums, but they're BAD forums. Naturally I couldn't restrain myself from posting something about the bad choice they'd made and that they should change to something better. Yes, I did mention Snitz, but seeing how they charge outrageous amounts of money for Windows 2000 hosting, I knew that idea'd disappear into the "archives" right away |
