I was offered to do a speciallity ASP coding for a memorial website, but my problem is, I don't know how much they should pay me.
I need to make a database with pictures, names, dates (DOB,DOD) and bios. It should have a posting option (and for some reason the maker doesn't want it to be moderated in any way, easier for me ) and a (limited to preset users) managment option. Any idea how much I should charge? |

If you don't have an *absolutey clear* spec you should charge by the hour. Otherwise you'll end up saying (say) $500, and there will be no limit to how much 'stuff' they'll feel they get for $500 and you'llbe a slave for the rest of your days!
And no, this job won't be any different from the others, it *always* happens like that unless you can either rein them in with 'that is outside the spec so will cost more' or charge by the hour.
See http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/193091900X for a really good explanation of how to charge for software development. It is worth the money! hth |

I agree, unless you've a firm contract with the person stick to charging by the hour and provide an up front estimate of the work, dont forget to include time to gather and confirm the requirements, write any user manuals or documentation and some contingency in case things turn to custard.
As for hourly rates I've seen people charging anywhere from $40 US to $110.00 US per hour for web work.
For simple stuff I charge around $20 per hour for more complex $30 but then I also benefit from exchange rates which is why I charge a little less US to NZ Dollar is 2 to 1 :) |
