So I moved in to my new house and got the total broadband package, digital phone, cable tv, cable modem and for the first 2 days everything was awesome. We went away for the weekend and now the cable modem doesn't seem to like to play well with others...
So as I'm using the modem, everynow and again, I'll get a message that pops up saying "Network cable is unplugged" Knowing full well typing doesn't unplug keyboards. I've tried a couple of things, I've checked all the connections from the wall to the modem and from the modem to the PC. I've replaced the network cable with a brand new one just to be sure it wasn't the problem. According to RCN (our provider) the modem looks fine from their end so it must be either a problem with the network card or the computer.
Also rebooting and power cycling the modem works temporarily but the modem goes out after a bit. Sometimes it's after a minute sometimes 30 plus minutes, very hard to predict.
The guy from tech support later admitted he experiences similar problems with windows XP and his cable modem. Has anyone else experienced similar things and if so is there any known remedies. My poor wife is going crazy. |

I use XP with a cable modem and my brother does that as well, and have been doing that for about 2 years now. Never had a problem with it.
Maybe its related to the modem model... |

Probably a problem with your cable or one of the connectors. My laptop port replicator has a flakey RJ45 connector, if I wiggle the cable slightly in the socket the same thing happens to me.

So possibly the connector in my NIC card or the modem?
Somebody at work suggested updating the drivers for the NIC card to see if that helps. I'll try almost anything at this point. |

An issue I recently came accross is that some devices, in my case an old 3Com 24p hub, just don't have the spring strength or an odd width to 'em in the rj45 ports. One set of crimpers would push the tabs down a little too far for this hub, making for a flaky connection. Another set work just fine. So...any cables I made with the first crimpers would work in all hubs except for the 3Com. Talk about a hair-puller!

This could be as simple as the signal strength. Ask the cable company to send a LINE TECHNICIAN out to test it. It must be within a very narrow range in order to achieve optimum connection. They may need to install a booster or a buffer. |

That could be true Carefree but I don't think thats actually the cause of the WinXP Icon appearing saying the connection is disconnected, WindowsXP doesn't actually poll the link from the Modem to the ISP to see whether its connected or not, but it does poll the NIC on the PC to see if there is a connection, as far as I know the information is gathered from the NIC and should match the status of the Link-Intergrity light on the back of it.
This error to me would indicate somethine wrong with the CAT5(e) between the modem and your PC or one of the RJ-45 Jacks themselves, failing that the NIC in your PC may also be the problem area, and failing that the modem itself maybe failing, you'll basically need to replacing each one until you find the cause.
When the problem starts take a look at the back of your NIC, there should be a link-integrity indicator as I mentioned above. If it is lit, it indicates that there is a physical connection between the network card and something at the other end of the wire — usually a hub or in your case the Cable Modem. It does not mean that the cable type is correct, or that the frequency response of the installation is sufficient to provide reliable communications. But the light does just fine for a quick “Is it plugged in at the other end?” check. |

We had a simular issue to this with our test lab.. The system was fine when you were on it, but leave it and try to get data on it from remote system and then the fun begins, which is what made it harder to find. The firewalls would see it, then it would vanish, and of course we all thought that it was a firewall issue, as they take so long in that area anyway.
Then we had enough and ripped the fly lead (CAT6 (not 5) lead) out and replaced it and it hasn't missed a beat since. This was a ready-made fly lead as well, so it shows you that they even turn up faulty.. It is a matter of elimination and I would follow Gremlin's advice.

Well I've replaced the cable, that still didn't work. I called RCN back up and complained about the modem one more time. They're sending a technician out today to swap the modem. If that's not the problem then I'll look to the NIC card, but I just bought the computer 3 weeks ago, so I hope that's not the problem.
Thanks for all the help. |

For anyone who cares, or tried to help (thank you) the cable guy came by yesterday and replaced the modem and the cable and everything is working great again. We'll see if it lasts more than 2 days this time! |
