I have been a lot on a forum (don't know wich software), where the user can choose to have replies shown ascending or decending. I find it a realy big time saver to have the most recent replies on top instead of always having to scroll down and find, the place, where I left the forum last time. Can this be implemented into the Snitz software?

I've implemented this in a 3.3 forum. However, for the life of me I can't find out where I got the code from.
I'm going to work backwards to try and dig it out from the forum and update it for 3.4
Pretty sure WorkMule had something to do with it.. |

Thanks Gremlin
You didn't realy get my point , but your post gave me some search clues. I found this thread: http://forum.snitz.com/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=31300&SearchTerms=topic,sorting,mod The interesting part for me is the last post by MeTV. I started making my homepage 1 week ago (with no previous experience at all) and most of the tme has been spend with playing with first 3.33 and then 3.4. So I have learned VERY little coding I find myself good at logic though , so I figured out I needed to find something similar in the topic.asp. I looked it thru and decided line 331 had to be the one to mutate. So I changed it from
strSql4 = " ORDER BY R.R_DATE ASC"
to
strSql4 = " ORDER BY R.R_DATE DESC"
It gives an interesting result: The first cell stays in top place with the original message and... The replies comes with the newest one on top and the oldest one last.
At first I was disappointed, and I tried changing line 219 also, but that did not give the desired effect either, so I changed it back. But thinking about it somemore, I actually like it a lot. It brings the replies in the order I want them in, and (hopefully) helps keeping the topic in-topic.
I see one future problem though: The replies will not have a consistent &whichpage=# ending, if someone want to link to a certain reply. But for now I will fix this by letting my pages be 80replies long (my forum is not even official yet).
Now if someone could finnish this mod by making a (probably huge) mod, that lets the first (insert number here) replies have &whichpage=1 and then the next (insert same number here) replies have &whichpage=2, then the mod would be almost complete. I am shure, if it can ever become complete, because the original message will never get a stable &whichpage=# (unless it comes on top of every &whichpage=#).
If the whole thing was changed, so the original topic is last (wich would make everthing cronological), then I guess it could be done by some smart person (that is how it is done in the forum I mentioned in my original message (it is Danish, so I guess there will be not much use in linking to it here).
That was a long story - I hope you found it to soem level interesting :)

I did get your point :)
The mod is by WorkMule I just can't find my copy of it, if you look at the topics in his forum here you will see at the bottom of the page a drop down to change the order of the posts. |
