Try and do the Invision board. I suspect it'll be between that and Snitz for the top spot. |

Does anyone know the magnitude performance differences between 3.3 and 3.4? We had a fairly large forum on 3.3, and it was a *total* dog, we kept getting kicked off of webhosts due to excessive CPU usage. Not surprising, since the default.asp page was taking up to 8 seconds to render even off-peak. And before you ask, I've checked, double checked, and triple-checked the SQL indexes. I even tried the adding the new index posted here that was supposed to improve those queries. I pulled out some of the features just to make it render faster. We just had a lot of forums and it didn't handle it well.
Both of our former hosts suggested that we'd need a dedicated server. If you've ever looked at pricing on dedicated servers, the choice was clear, we had to leave our good pal Snitz behind and go with something that runs on Linux ($89/month vs. $229/month). We've switched to PHPBB and none of us can get over how much faster it is, even on the local dev machines. If you're waffling between PHP and Snitz and you think your site may grow to be very popular, getting something that can run on either platform is something to think about. Unfortunately, chili!soft ASP for Linux isn't free.
Our shared host doesn't expire until Oct 1st, once we get everyone moved over to the PHP/Linux system I'll probably upload 3.4 to see how much faster it runs. I have a really tough time swallowing that it could possibly improve things enough to make it faster than the PHPBB system, but I'll give it a shot!
Snitz has been a terrific system, we've had a lot of fun with it and it will be missed. I'm already trying to re-work my PHPBB system to be more like Snitz.

Snitz 3.4 is much, much faster than 3.3. One of the things that was done was a optimization of the database accesses, precisely to reduce the load on the database server. So, I don't think you'd have the problems you had before with your hosts.
I always seem find Linux hosting cheaper than Windows hosting (and the cause should be immediately obvious), so running a phpbb should probably always be cheaper than running Snitz, but I think you'll find Snitz 3.4 disturbingly fast if you try it . |
