I've replaced an existing forum, which hadn't been active for close to a year, with version 3.401 with an access 2000 database (strConnString = "Provider=Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0;Data Source=C:\InetPub\forum\db\slc_forum.mdb" '## MS Access 2000).
The database upgraded okay, the forums, catagories, and users all seem to be added correctly. The problem is it is taking between 15 and 60 seconds per page load. Is there something very basic that I missed in setting the forum up that could account for such slow performance?

the Araneae program mentioned in the readme. It could be a host problem, but how can I determine? |

I'm still testing 3.4.01 too. At times it seems slower than 3.3.05 which I know should not be the case. The noticeable problem for me is that it seems to occassionally take a long time from post to confirmation page. At worst, it will take over a minute to post. I don't think this happens with the 3.3.05. I'm still watching and playing with it though. I think it may be my host.
I have an Access 2000 db and my host is readyhosting.

This symptom is usually a problem with resources for the database connection or an overworked database. Inserts are slower in general than selects, and the slowness is magnified if your server is "stressed". If you're not using the OLEDB connection string, you should. Otherwise slowness when busy is just a fact of how the Access drivers work and are shared on a web server.

Just an FYI, my host is readyhosting and they switched me to Medium Pooled to speed up my forum. This is a brand new install with very few posts and page generation time was taking around 2 secs (which is large for a small board). This helped for a while, but now I'm getting page generation times of > 2 sec which appears to be longer because either their pipe out is clogged or my pipe in is.... maybe ReadyHosting has bigger problems right now. |

I don't know much about readyhosting, but do they offer SQL Server? If so, it really might be worth considering. I also know a couple ISPs that offer SQL + web hosting for about $60 a month, if you're interested. I think it would definitely help your performance. |

ReadyHosting offers SQL for $25/mo extra (I think). And I think the slowness that I'm experiencing now is partly host but mostly my cruddy connection. |

Yes, connection is always an issue. There's a good page that can give you info about your connection speed - www.cyscape.com/showbrow.asp - find the Connection Speed. I've found it to be reasonably accurate. Anything above 15 k/s is OK. Obviously, the higher the better. |

That's probably your answer. I'd ask some people with fast connections to check out your forum and see how fast it goes for them.
To the original poster, what tpye of connection do you have? |

86580 bits/sec (10.57 KBytes/sec)
Thanks for the link.
Any slowness must be my host, because I was playing around with my 3.4.01 test site tonight, and it seemed fine (fast). My concern was when it seemed slow from my work where I have a fast connection (~3000 KBytes/sec).

Bax,
I wish I were in Hawai`i right now. To many people's surprise, I am in NJ, but my site is dedicated to Hawaiian slack key guitar.

Do not bother with a SQL database on Readyhosting. At first it worked fine. Then, at some point last year, Readyhosting got hacked. When that happened, they installed the Checkpoint firewall software. However they configured it, all of the "internal" SQL traffic went through the firewall, slowing forums to a crawl (usually couldn't make it through displaying a page). After a couple months of them doing nothing to fix it, they finally did something and the forums worked again. It ran, but still unacceptably slow. The forums never were able to work like they did prior to the disaster, and their support wouldn't do anything about it. |
