I searched for my username 'airilm' and it came up with some matches that aren't related. I never posted to, that word isn't present. Try it out.
The date format should be configurable. MM/DD/YY is what I use.
I would also make it so that you can search: 1. current messages only 2. current messages & archived messages 3. archived messages only.
I would strip out common words like Google does. the words "or, and, the" wouldn't be searched.
..just some suggestions. Let me know if you add any of these to the new search.

Why? there is a popup calender to select the dates

It is not possible to search current & archives at the same time, they are in a completely different set of tables, linking them into the queery would be a nightmare unless a hash table was created to stor the results in as they were fetched from each table.

I did think about it, but the search returns that quickly it doesn't really matter, and sometimes is useful to allow them

Heh, I had people say the same thing when I added a similar calendar. It's amazing how resistant people are to using these things even though it is super easy to use. I finally added a note above it - "Use the calendar!" I think everyone will get it eventually but in this case the date format is really odd because it's for a Crystal Report thingy.

It's like English vs. Metric, drive on the right side or the left...
The calendar works great, but it's all in how it looks, and how the user experience on the site is. Most people I know would see 3/2/2002 as March 2, 2002 and not Feb 3, 2002. Snitz, is going to soon be "internationalized", stuff like this should be part of it.
And as far as searching for my username, I didn't change any options, just typed my username 'airilm' in.

Well most people I know would think it was 3rd Feb 2002

I think HuwR's calendar looks like any here in the USA. That's the cool thing about a calendar. Date format is not important because you select the date. I think it would be more helpful if somehow no one could even see the format and they only saw the calendar to avoid confusion.

you can do that using javascript and a hidden form field. |

You could if it was a web page, but like I said it isn't, I will see if it is possible to hide it.

I saw this on someone's PHP forum, maybe the same concept could apply... somehow. (look at the Date Format option at the very bottom of the form) http://www.aemod.co.uk/forum/profile.php?mode=register&agreed=true
Oh and did you have anything to do with that Y2K thing? "I don't want to format the dates differently for everyone..." "I don't want to type out the whole year..."
Anyway, the new search tool is awesome. I always thought the search capability in Snitz always lacked a little (no offense). Search tools have become an art form of the years. Now you just need to integrate the highlite of searched words MOD into it as well as sorting by relevance. As far as the date format, I can live with it. It will give me an excuse to get off my a** and write a MOD instead of just complaining when the people doing it for free don't do it exactly like I want.
Thanks Huwr

I second that. Improving the forum's search has been on my wish list for some time. Those timeouts are really annoying.

Yes, only the admin can change the format, unless we completely rewrite the date code.

If you hadn't noticed, it is not part of the forum, and only returns very basic information to link you back to the forum topic

??? And how would you decide what is more relevant ??? if you mean doing fulltext/soundex seaarching, this requires changing settings on the serverand completely rewriting the queeries to accomadate that, and enabling full text searching on the forum table would be a very bad idea.
