If this MOD does't already has been created my suggestion is:
A daybook MOD, where each gets a personal daybook and in that they could post messages and only themselves could read them.

actually, I've seen lots of other forums with personal journals, which oddly enough is becoming more and more of a popular thing to do on the net.

Some people use blogs as diaries. I believe there are some sites where you can register for an online diary and then someone who is a registered member there can request permission to read your "diary".
I think it'd take a lot of work to make Snitz do something like that, especially if you want it combined with normal forums...

I bet the UserGroup MOD might work for it.
I'm not up on the latest Beta though.

LOL, very true... most online diaries I've seen are run by women (sorry for the sexist accusation) anyway. go figure.

You would not need the UserGroup MOD to set up Blogs for forum members. It would be far easier to modify the guestbook MOD or something similar. It would probably be a lot like an extension of a person's profile(I am assuming we mean a to show these to the world since everyone does it this way) with a way of adding entries at whatever interval a member wishes.

I am considering making one of these for my site. I have actually had a few members ask about having one in the last few days and I think it would be pretty easy to set up. Just think of the posts as being related to a member rather than to a topic. Then borrow the functionality of the Link Manager commenting and rating functionality and there you go. And then add a link in a members profile and maybe on each post they make a link to their Blog.

OK, I am interested in this MOD. I am involved with roleplaying website, and having a "diary" style thing is what a lot of players like to keep about their characters....
This would be rather cool.

I have already done such a mod. But since I didin't think that someone can be interested in it, I haven't documented it yet. I may realese it as a mod later, may be.

deviantart is a totally different situation, because they allow the ability to show off your artwork and other stuff therefore finding a need to comment on it by the original author and other members of that site which by the way I am a member of... that is one of the best sites I have been to. my comment about the journals was more related to the over abundance of online journal subscriptions you can find (forum excluded).
as for a personal journal mod, I found a mod this weekend that someone did for personal guestbook which is easily converted to a personal journal with some simple code modifications. that may be your best bet for simplicity and functionality.

There are some diary/journals/bloggers out there that could be modded. I know there are a lot of people out there who want to keep personal diaries online and even if given the option of making them private, most of the diarists make them public. I've also seen some organizers/daybooks that would include a calendar, projects, tasks, etc that could be modded.

One thing that makes me want to write my own is that a lot of the Blog applications out there are lame. perhaps there are some good ones out there but the few I have been directed to to check out have horrible designs and you are unable to personalize them much. The back ends are decent but how wonderful is that when the part you show everyone has zero character?

I actually converted such a guestbook script in order to use for my needs.
Here are what I have:
- inc_latest_diary_entries.asp ( top 5 journal entries for the main page of my site)
- inc_diary.asp (for the profile pages of members)
- diary.asp (lists all the diary entries according to different criterias)
What I like most about "member journal" is that, it gives the real soul of community to the people. Additionally, you can say to your members "write your off-topic ideas into your diaries."
