This week was blown away when my host lost his server and I had to scramble to find a new one and set my whole site up again :( .. not helping that was the fact that my new host is only running SQL7 and my DB was setup for SQL2000 using nice things like CASCADING INSERT and DELETE Relationships, which of course SQL7 does not support

Nathan yes, sorry forgot to post, basically you need to add a clustered index to the sort field you use in active_users.asp
in mine it is dateCreated but may be different in yours, this
seems to have sorted it out.

However, for low volume sites it should not be necesary.

I am still a bit stupid on clustered index.

Is it as simple as adding an ID column to the ACTIVE_USERS table and using that for the update in inc_functions.asp? Or do I need to do somthing else.

My version of AU4 doesn't have any sorting in active_users.asp. Did you add the sorting yourself Huw (and therfore perhaps create the locking problem yourself too ) or am I just not using the most recent version of active_users.asp ?... or the third and more likey option ... am I just going nuts fullstop.

K, so adding an AU_ID column and using it to sort on Active.asp and for the update statments. That should prevent this problem.

*Wants to be sure*

EDIT: My mother always said think before you speak, maybe one day I'll learn too. the below wont work becuase its not unique, I'd forgotten about Guests having MemberId = 0

Instead I've added an Autonumber AU_ID field and made it the PK on my live site, I'll let you know if I encounter any problems

Just an PK index on MEMBER_ID might suffice, I dont see the need for a an extra column or any sort orders to be put in, but then Huw seems to be on a different track to me here so I'll just let him have the last word I guess

A clustered index may be overkill here, since it's not likely that this table will have that many records, but it will sure speed things up a bit. Anyway this small number of records will also mean that the disadvantages usually associated with clustered indexes likely won't show up either.
