I'm using 255 character fields because I have limited it to 5 ip's and 5 ip ranges. I believe it's more than enough. You can't just use the ban ip mod to stop users. You have to use it along with other preventive measures to stop un-wanted or mis-behaving users. That is why I have limited it to 5 each. Banning by ip address is in no way a permanent way to block users or stop users.
