Am I following this right? Looking at the Oxle site, which I assume is being kept updated, you're commiting to setting a video window maximum size of 320 x 240, except for WMP which has a max of 600 x 600?
Is there any technical reason for the 320 x 240 limit? For instance, the Quicktime link I posted above is for a movie of 384 x 288 - which was yielded from a discrete division of the source material dimensions (which is what I got from a professional telecine from 35mm film negative on to 3:4 Digi-SP). It's not an arbitrary figure.
A lot of my potential users, who generally produce Quicktime files for demos, would rather see a lager size available, especially to accomodate widescreen. Remember that the old 4:3 aspect ratio won't be with us for much longer except for archive stuff. Think of how a widescreen clip would look squeezed into 320 x 240. Might I suggest a width limit of at least 480?
BTW All this suggests that Snitz only works on PCs and not on Apple Macs. Is that so? < |

Sorry, I'm not following you...Where do you find the 600x600 dimensions ? The functions used for topics have a predetermined width, all being 320x240 ; this is to not mess up the topic layout.

As I said, the width limitations are only applicable to the media shown in topics ; on vid.asp you can define the width and height of the clip by means of &w=640&h=480 (resulting in a clip 640 pixels wide and 480 pixels tall) In topic.asp, it's restricted to what I've currently set in embedding.js. You can however simply change the functions in embedding.js, to set the default. There's no option however to give normal users the ability to set the width/height themselves, to prevent XSS exploits.

Nope ; Snitz should be usable on Apple Macs. The Windows Media Player however is kind of restricted to the Windows platform if I'm not mistaking...< |

I got the 600 x 600 from your oxle forum which states:As long as your video/flash animation is less wide than 320 pixels, and less than 240 pixels tall, there's no problem. If you need more space, use the media player. That syntax is also very simple: vid.asp?s=sourcefile&t=type&w=width&h=height sourcefile: any valid URL will do. type: f for flash, q for quicktime, a for audio and w for content playable with Windows Media Player. witdh & height : any integer up to 600 wide and 600 tall. Example: vid.asp?s=http://thisismyvideo.com/myvid.wmv&t=w&w=480&h=320 Easy as that! Maybe I'm reading it wrong, but I saw all players other than WMP as being restricted in size, but you're saying the limits for all players can be re-defined in embedding.js?
My worry is that you might inadvertantly hobble this mod for those who work in widescreen, use Quicktime as their preferred file format, or just because they want to ensure cross-platform compatability - which WMP will not give them. Surely anyone interested in moving pics has Quicktime installed?
Could I make a repeated plea that you at least increase the default width limitation? To 480 perhaps? If the height limitation is left at 240 would that not take care of your other worries?
I would think that the biggest problems with this mod when finally out there in the real world are not going to be to do with layout, but with codec incompatabilities and with folk posting huge video files, or getting the file settings wrong. Let alone copyright...
BTW Haven't we forgotten RealMedia? I'm not a big fan of it (I use RealAlternative for playback available at http://home.hccnet.nl/h.edskes/finalbuilds.htm ) but folk will likely want to post .ram files... < |

Ok, I see what causing the messup ; with 'media player', I mean the oxle media player, e.g. vid.asp. So, indeed, it's not limited to just Windows Media, but all formats. Examples: http://oxle.com/vid.asp?s=O7&t=s&w=640&h=480 (flash) http://oxle.com/vid.asp?s=NW&w=320&h=314 (wmv) http://oxle.nl/vid.asp?s=O9&t=q&w=600&h=465 (quicktime, big one!!)
The problem with Quicktime is that it's 'crappy' at scaling a video. You're however free to change the ReplaceQTTags in inc_func_common.asp to suit your needs, just change the highlighted details:
CodeTags(1,1,2) = "<div class=""media""><script language=""javascript"">EmbedQuicktimeT("""
CodeTags(1,2,2) = """,320,256,false)</script></div><div class=""break""></div>" Be sure to update the poster image accordingly, since it needs to be the same size!< |

Thanks for the (as ever) prompt reply.
QT may be crappy at scaling, but (in theory) it should be set at the correct size in the first place!
I just hope my host (Podge? ) is amenable to size tweaks. It would only be the once.
Got a RealMedia button for you: Hope it's useful. < |

Actually there's loads of real Media files .rm .ram .rmvb .rpx .smi .smil .ra .rpm .rt .rp. What do we actually need though? Just a button for each meadia player? In which case we only need one for all the varieties of Window Media if WMP is to handle that.
I'd be happy to just stick with Quicktime and Flash!
Unfortunately there's also a variety of widescreens. But if you think that two buttons would make that easier to implement and manage, then you're much more the expert. < |

ASF is already in there ; just use [wmv][/wmv] Same player, same object. In fact, you can play ALL media that can be played with WMP using the [wmv][/wmv] tag, even audio, however, the difference with the audio player is that it reduces the height, leaving you with just the time/volume controls.
For Realmedia, I guess we should support all formats, so both RM as well as RAM.< |

I got it running that way too however it requires that the user extracts the url from the "Put on site" code. The regex does that so that the user can just post the code as it is without having to edit it.
These are the functions for embedding.js
function EmbedGVT(GoogleURL, width, height, autostart) {
if(autostart != true && autostart != false && autostart != "true" && autostart != "false"){
autostart = false; //Replace with default. Default = false.
}//See if we can continue.
if(GoogleURL == null || GoogleURL == "illegal"){
//Nope, we can't.
document.writeln(" error: illegal use of video tag! ");
}else{
//Add the code to the document.
document.writeln('<embed style="width:400px; height:326px;" id="VideoPlayback" align="middle" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="' + GoogleURL);
document.writeln('" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" quality="best" bgcolor="#ffffff" scale="noScale" wmode="window" salign="TL" > </embed>');
}
}
function EmbedGV(GoogleURL, width, height, autostart) {
if(autostart != true && autostart != false && autostart != "true" && autostart != "false"){
autostart = false; //Replace with default. Default = false.
}//See if we can continue.
if(GoogleURL == null || GoogleURL == "illegal"){
//Nope, we can't.
document.writeln(" error: illegal use of video tag! ");
}else{
//Add the code to the document.
document.writeln('<embed style="width:400px; height:326px;" id="VideoPlayback" align="middle" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" src="' + GoogleURL);
document.writeln('" allowScriptAccess="sameDomain" quality="best" bgcolor="#ffffff" scale="noScale" wmode="window" salign="TL" > </embed>');
}
}
I'll post the rest later (can't get to it now).< |
