Was wondering if anyone new of any mailing list software that I could run off my nachine (preferrably using my e-mail app. to send the actual mails) that I could plug into our MySQL database to select e-mail addresses and other details based on queries I submit? Something as well that could allow us to set up strings within the body of an e-mail to be replaced with values returned from the database. For example, allowing us to place [M_NAME] in the body of an e-mail to be replaced with M_NAME as selected from our MEMBERS table.

<edit> Bump! Sorry! </edit>

You want to do that from a web site, or from your desktop?

Locally, from my desktop; with our expected growth rate, I'm trying to reduce some of the work having to be done directly through the site such as sending out newsletters, etc..

Is the mailing list big? Would Outlook be an option to do it?

It all depends on the criteria I enter, there are a few, opt-in notifcations members can sign up for (our special offers, third party offers, etc.). Of course, there will be the rare ocassion when we will need to contact the entire membership which, while not massive yet, is growing all the time. Also, we will ocassionally target e-mails at specific members (By gnder, location, etc.). So, the size of the list is going to vary quite significantly from mailing to mailing and is also the reason I need some sort of software that can hook up to our MySQL database so I can run queries on it to extract the necessary addresses, names, etc..

What I do, with a small mailing list I have, is to open Outlook from Access, run whatever query I want to get the addresses and then send the emails with Outlook.

You could run some VisualBasic from Outlook, connect to your MySQL DB using ADO, run the query you want, and then use Outlook to send the emails. I can post some code ilustrating this way of working and then you can try it for yourself.

Sounds like and interesting solution, Rui, even if it does involve using Outlook! Don't suppose it could be done with OE as I've never used Outlook?

I'm not sure OE supports 'Automation', but you could try doing the same with CDONTS and a few licks of code

Pdrg, that's the very route I'm trying to avoid, as our membeship increases, mass mailing is going to put more and more strain on our server so I'm trying to set it up so I can do it locally. I'll have a fiddle with Outlook in the morn', see what sort of progress I can make.

Hey Shaggy,
Well, it's not quite what you are looking for, I use a program from e-undertwon. http://www.e-undertown.com/en/software.asp.
I import members from a database, you can customize fields to include, and it sends from your local machine. I use it weekly for about 1000 members, I have used it for up to 5000 at one time with no trouble. It will also allow you to set a reply to address to either unsubscribe, or subscribe, and it will go and get those invites / cancellations.
It has a ton of features I am not using. Just thought I'd point this one out, I had a heck of a time looking for a newsletter program I liked.

Won't emailing from your client go via the server anyway, mate?

Don't forget you could use CDONTS just as well from your client machine as your server - but at some point up the tree you'll need an SMTP server connected to t'internet

:)

Cheers, Cliff, will give that a look.

Didn't explain that very well, did I, Pdrg?! Yeah, the mails'll dtill have to go through my server but without all the additional overheads incurred using the ASP engine to build up the mailing list and send the e-mails out individually

Shaggy,

Been away all day, but if you want to have a look at Outlook (OE won't do, as far as I know) I can post some of my code.

Ok, here is a sample script.
It was quickly adapted to show you how to do it, but it works and shows the main aspects of the process.

Ta muchly for that, Rui Looks to be easy enough at first glance, I'll take it for a test drive after lunch. I assume I crack open the VB editor (from the Macros) editor and drop the code into the "Immediate" window then save it and open it with Outlook? Which element of the "tree" do I place it under (I have "Project 1" > "Microsoft Outlook Object" > "ThisOutlookSession")?
