Yes, we got a lot of flack when we moved a mailing list to a forum, so I spent 2 weeks writing a delphi mail server which allowed the forum to work like a mail list, it mailed new posts out, and you could email a topic or reply.
However, the interest after it was trialled was very bad so I canned the idea. So much for giving the users what they want.
