Has anyone looked into Amazon's Honor System?
http://s1.amazon.com/exec/varzea/subst/fx/home.html

Supposedly you set it up and people can make donations to your site through Amazon. Interesting idea. Maybe if it was "easier" to make donations, you guys could get a little bit more $ coming your way.

Or in regards to another post about Developers for Hire, for people who are willing to pay for assistance for mods or whatever (according to that topic), maybe instead of being paid directly, maybe a donation could be made when they receive assistance with their mods and stuff.

Also, has their been any consideration about getting a Snitz affiliation with Amazon?
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/subst/associates/join/associates.html

By setting up the affiliation program, next time someone orders something from Amazon, they would have the option of going through Snitz, knowing that Snitz would get a referral fee for every sale. It doesn't cost the user anything, but Snitz would benefit. I would think with all the people who filter through here, if you could get a couple of people to buy through the affiliation, it would start to add up over time.

(Hey, look it's a bug! - it's only supposed to be one apostrophe)

Looks interesting...from time to time members have been asking what books we use...I don't mind putting my favorite ones (are all in English and available via Amazon.com) on a page, with a link to Amazon. Wouldn't like huge graphics clutter up the pages of the forums though...but a small textlink might be nice..

You could setup something like a Snitz shop page that highlighted some books and pointed people to Amazon. If people saw that, maybe the next time they were to buy a book at Amazon, then they would use the Snitz shop and then you guys would get part of the sale.

Snitz Portal Mod to the rescue!

I have taken the liberty to use this opportunity to showcase the amazing versatility of my Mod. Ahem... It can be used in exactly a manner that would serve this purpose AND allow forum interaction!!

Anyhow, yeah, it works nicely... I have a few books up there that I just copy and pasted from Amazon, check it out. Please make sure that you click on the 'Click Here to Discuss this Resource' links to view more reviews posted by admin. Login as admin to view the extra functions.

Brent, this looks cool (well ok...the colours aren't my style..but the idea looks really nice)

Would it be possible to use stars for the rating instead of just the word "excelent" etc.
That would make the rating also more visible.

gor,

I setup the color scheme for my own site, but that gray scheme is just for the demo. The default Snitz color scheme doesn't look to great with the way I have the color variables setup, but I will play with that to make it look nice with this site's color scheme...

I will also change the ratings to show stars instead of words. Good point on the visibility...

Reinsnitz,

Those blasted bugs! The only one I know about I just fixed, (when deleting a category, error in the display...) but if you let me know where you got the other errors I will fix them ASAP.

Other fixes include showing the decimals in the price... Need to ask HuwR about his mod_dbsetup.asp file, I don't think it allows the creation of int fields that support decimals. Anyone know?

Sincerely,

Gor,

Changed the words to stars, I used the gold star just because... but this could be easily changed.

Demo of ratings w/ stars

I am working on the colors now. I will try to make the color variables setup in a way that resembles this sites colors as closely as possible... I'll get back to you when it's done.

Colors done...

HuwR, glad you like it

BUT is it possible to create a currency field or an int field with 2 decimals to allow for the correct display of prices using your mod_dbsetup.asp file? I'm using the version that Aznknight distributed with his links mod (with the 'Forum_' string in the table names). Or, if this isn't possible could you suggest a method of setting this up that others will be able to reproduce?

Maybe use text field instead...?

Thanks.

I would store it as text, since a form input field will give it you as text anyway.

The stars look good, though there might still be some problems.
I rated the ASP 3 book 4 times as Excelent, but it still displayed only 1 star.

Storing the IP-number + a cookie (double check) for the rating might be wise, to prevent or detect flooding of the rating.

Gor,

Fixed the problem with the ratings stars (forgot to reset the counter variable... oops! )

Good idea on the rating tracking (once again! Gor with those crazy ideas ) However, I am very hesitant to add new fields to the db tables to record the ip addresses since the rating fields are alongside the link fields to save db space... (I mean that I didn't use a separate table for them) So, I would prefer to use the cookie method for this... Isn't there a function in inc_functions.asp to do this somewhere? I'll look into adding it ASAP.

I am also fixing the colors for the ratings/report link pages, to make the titles and instructions a bit more visible... (* Done)Will have the updated price field done ASAP too. Once all that is done I think it will be safe to take this mod out of beta and update the zip...

Dictionary ElBrento
Crazy: (Cray-Z'ee) newfangled and innovative, often unheard of or un-thought of. See Also... Snitz Portal Mod Development

I was simply reffering to your feature requests, crazy used in a sarcastic tone (hard to transmit via text), meaning I should have thought of them.

I think the question would be easier if you phrased it

'when was the last time I didn't have a crazy idea'
