This mod allows you to distribute forum topics to any other website by allowing them to embed a javascript file inline with their HTML.
A demo can be seen at http://www.digitalcrack.net/forums/link.asp?TOPIC_ID=12.
A demo of the link builder can be seen at http://www.digitalcrack.net/forums/setupLinks.asp.
The required files can be downloaded at http://www.digitalcrack.net/snitz-syndication.zip.
I apologize if something like this has already been done, but I needed it for something and decided to make it available.
This script is useful if you would like to include recent or high activity forum threads on any other page of a website without actually imbedding any ASP or dealing with connections. It also allows other people to put links to your topics on their websites, completely inline with their HTML.
Any comments can be sent to kurt@nicefire.com

Awesome idea, Kurt! I use something similar to allow local site's to get their weather feed from mine (in beta: http://www.cantonweb.com/weatheron.htm) but I never thought about forum posts.
...er, could I trouble you for a working link, tho? I can't seem to get it with that one.

Nevermind - I didn't look to see that the forum had coded it with http://forum.snitz.com as part of the link.
A straight copy-paste worked fine.

It's been updated.
I added a way to output the links using either XML or Netscape's RSS format. Theoretically you can enter the location of the RDF file into the mod portion of Slashcode or PHP Nuke and have them seamlessly integrated onto a site. I haven't tried it though.

Kurt,
Wow, great idea! This is such a good way to spread access to your forum with very little work and coding required on the linkers part. I do like, indeed, I do very much!
Mwahaha, soon the day will come when all websites will feature MY forums 5 most recent topics! Ahem. Sorry.
Sincerely,
Brent Trevel, Combat Intelligence www.combatintelligence.com |

Thanks Kurt, totaly awesome!
Question: The links include posts from "Private forums" which results in the visitors being sent to an error page! Could it be possible to prevent these posts from being included in the "syndication_links" ? Also, when a topic is x pages long, could the "syndication-link" send the visitor to the latest page?

Heh... I didn't even think about private forums. That's an easy enough fix, I'll do it later this evening.
The page numbers thing will be put in too.
Good ideas.

I added options to hide private threads, and also an option to jump directly to the last page of a thread.
To jump to the last page of a thread, you must now replace the "link.asp" file found in the forums directory with the new one included in the Zip file. There is only one very small change made to that file, so it will not affect anything else that uses it.
I also cleaned up the links the script generates a bit. I was getting an especially long query string.

Can you give me a link to where you got that error? I'm not able to reproduce it.

Oops, found it. I left out a space in one of the options for a SQL String.
It's fixed now, go ahead and grab the Zip file again and replace syndicate.asp with the new version.

Just a thought Kurt:
Your Mod could also be made into a "desktop button(icon)" that users could (download, copy/ paste)use to open a popup mini window in there screen to check the recent activities on the forum !(could include:first 12 letters+date/time ?) Sorry for saying so, but i think that would be a totaly brilliant marketing device! The "QuickSnitz" !
