Hi,

I am the president of a Mercedes Benz special interest group, and we have been using a Snitz 2000 message board for years. However, our webmaster suddenly disappeared and now we have lost control over some parts of the board. I do think we are in the possession of some passwords.
Is there anyone that could offer professional help or does anybody know a person or company that would supply this professional help?

Best regards,
Albert Plekker

Sounds like they need to get in to the admin stuff and that would require you to have FTP access and edit config.asp and change the number (in line 88 of a un-modified config.asp of Snitz Forums 2000 v3.4.07) to the number of the user you would like to give admin access to:

Const intAdminMemberID = 1

If you get stuck, send me an e-mail and I will help.

Cheers,

David Greening

The biggest issue at the moment is the fact that we cannot accept new members. I have FPT and RDC access to the server, and can see all the files related to Snitz.
I also think I have an administrative username and password for Snitz. But I have no idea where to start. Probably there is a manual or some help files of some sort on the net, but I again don't know where to start.
Maybe someone can point me in the right direction, there most likely are procedures on where to see new members and accept them.
I added a fictitious member, and copied the file 'snitz_forums-2000.mbd' to my local computer, and the entry is under the table 'FORUM_MEMBERS_PENDING' table.

Thanks for the replies and best regards,
Albert

If members are being added to the pending members table, this means email validation is ON, which makes total sense. In this situation, members are receive an email message, with a link they need to click and once they do, their membership is approved and they can login and post.

Forum configuration can be changed by logging in with an admin account and clicking the Admin Options link, available at the top right navigation area.

Well, I thought I had an administrative password, but whatever I have is not working. I understand from the FAQ's on this site that you cannot recover a password other than sending it to the original email address, which is not accessible to me.
So what now?
And another question: I added the new fictitious member, but did not get the email message to activate. Is this message automatically generated by the message board software or is human intervention needed?
Thanks,
Albert

If you have access to the database, you could always download the database, open the FORUM_MEMBERS table and edit the record for the account you have, changing the email address to one you can access. You can then reupload the database to the website and you should be good to go, that is, you can recover your password.

The email is automatic. It may be that before the email is sent, an admin needs to approve the new member. That can only be determined by looking at your configuration, and you need an admin account for that.

Rui,

I already did that. I changed the administrator's email address in FORUM_MEMBERS to one of mine, and it did say it sent an email with a link, but I never got it. So I assumed the email address was also still part of the encrypted stuff.

I tried another email address with the same result.

Any ideas why this trick did not work?

It may be that forum email is not working. You'd need to check the email server configuration and make sure those settings are correct, which, of course, would require you to be an admin.

Do you have your own regular member account there?

Yes, I do. But I cannot send myself an email through the board. It says it does, but it never arrives. However, I can send an email through the server installed Thunderbird mail server.
I have also looked at the Snitz_forums_2000.mdb file, at the table FORUM_CONFIG_NEW. The STREMAIL var is set to 1, STRMAILMODE is set to aspemail (I tried cdosys), the STRMAILSERVER to the smt mailserver address of Thunderbird, and the STRSENDER to the admin email address.

Any suggestions?

Thanks, Albert

Are you talking about Mozilla Thunderbird? Can you post the value of the email server address, here?
