I am sorry, if it works in a given folder and not on another, I don't see how IE that is to blame. It's clearly a config thing. I use IE for all my browsing and I am yet to find any issues like this.
If users had previously logged in from /chat, they will likely need to delete cookies before they are able to login again, when you move the forum away from /chat.
Also, when there are login issues, it's always advisable to provide account details, so that we can test and check what may be happening. |

Yes I thought it was related to our site, and David (Classicmotorcycling) had a look (David registered as a member of laser2000.org.uk)and has e-mailed me several suggestions. But the problem isn't solely at laser2000.org.uk, I have the same problem with this forum. i.e I login, then close IE, when I reopen IE I am no longer logged in. Using IE8/Vista Home Premium. I have checked all the IE parameters which should mean login is retained but to no avail. For laser2000.org.uk, I have looked and looked for differences between the relevant files in /chat/ and the new site. I haven't any so far, perhaps I'm not looking in the right place. Re deleting cookies, the user who is helping to resolve this issue deleted all cookies, as was all history, in an attempt to get IE to keep him logged in. He tried on 3 PCs in different locations, with the same effect. |

If the cookies are set to website, it should make no difference, really. Are the issues restricted to you and that other user only?
Again, if you want help, you shouldn't force those who may provide that help to register. Please post the details for a test account. |

Ruirib 1) Cookies are set to website, but I don't know whether the problem is restricted. IE logs me out of this forum, as I said above. Am I unique?
2) David wasn't forced to register, he asked if he may. He was very helpful, and understanding. Especially as I am definitely swimming out of my depth.
The difficulty I have, is that I can't find anything that would indicate where the problem lies if it is related to our website. Also there is a lot of criticism on the web about IE losing login across many websites.
Correct me if I am wrong, but as far as I can see the cookies are set in inc_function_common sub DoCookies, and that sub is called only by login.asp, when the user first logs in. That sub is identical in /chat/ and the new site, although of course, forum variables are different. |

unless this problem affects ALL your members it is extremely unlikely to be anything related to the forum settings, it must be something to do with your browser settings, especially if it works for you in FF, Snitz does not treat browsers any differently.
Are you for example using inprivate browsing in IE ? Windows Live Sync ? what OS are you running ? |

Huw No I am not using inprivate browsing in IE, just the default settings. I have checked that "Delete browsing history on exit" is unchecked. Not sure what you mean by Windows Live Sync, I'm not knowing using it. My laptop is Vista Home Premium with IE8 and the desktop is XP with IE8. As for whether it affects all members, I don't know. I have one committee member who is experiencing the problem on his home PC and his work PC, and another who is also affected. Apart from me that is, although my default browser is Firefox, so I'm not really affected. As I experience the same problem if I log into this forum using IE, I would like to know if anyone else also loses login. |

nobody other than yourself has reported any problems.
have you checked your cookie folder to see if it is actually writing the cookie ?
What is your IE privacy set to ?
What antivirus software do you have running ?
Have you tried doing an IE reset ? |

My comment about being forced to register just meant that if one of us wants to see what is happening to cookies, we have no other way but register. Providing account data would avoid that, but it seems you're not willing to do it. I don't think I should need to register to help, sorry. |

Ruirib My misunderstanding probably, but I am not clear what you mean by account data. Perhaps I am being a bit dumb.
And in answer to Huw, I've reset IE8, restarted it, logged into this forum, closed IE8, restarted again and find i am not logged in. Yes the cookie is being written at 'C:\Users\Ianslaptop\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Cookies\Low\ianslaptop@forum.snitz[2]' but is deleted when I close IE |

It's quite common and welcome to provide username and password for a test account to your forum, so that anyone willing to help won't need to go through the registration process. If you create such an account and post the details, or email them through the forum, I will be able to login using that data and see if I can reproduce your problems. |

Do you have the option to preserve favorites website data checked, in IE8?
I had no issues to login to your site in IE8, both on Windows 7 32 or 64 bits. I even tried IE 6 in XP mode and managed to login as well.
I would say that this is definitely a problem of your IE configuration. Please check that favorites website preservation setting. |

Ruirib, yes it is checked and forum.snitz and laser2000.org.uk is listed under trusted sites. Huw no 'delete browsing history on exit' is not checked, nor is 'delete Temporary Internet files when browser is closed' - Internet Options/Advanced - Security.
And yes, I can login to both sites OK, my username and password is preserved, BUT I have to login again if I close IE and restart it. With Firefox, I am logged in automatically as FF starts up.
If I check the IE cookies, the one containing my Username and encrypted password is deleted when IE closes. |
