When a user completes the lost password form with their username and email address they then receive an email of the form Please click on the link below to proceed to the next step. http://www.mysite.com/password.asp?pwkey=7g23i90uri59r83d41e1r8w2u0f4gl76 On then clicking the link they are directed to the 'Member Login' screen asking again for the username and password but no indication of the new password. Why?
I have identified the cause of the problem but don't know how to resolve it. My forum uses Frame forwarding. So the url that the users see for the forum is of this format "http://www.mysite.com" but is actually a folder on my main web site with a url of the form "http://www.mybigsite.com/forum"
I have this problem on my site also, we have never been able to cureit, sometimes if the mirror name is bookmarked it solves the problem other times it doesnt, all we do it give the members the correct url instead of the mirrowed one, its been the only cure for us.
One solution I'm considering is to edit the password.asp so that the email is sent directly to me. Then I can set a default passowrd and then the email the user that one so they can login and then change the password to what they require.
I've noted a similar problem with domain name controllers that use frame forwarding. Unfortunately I haven't had time to look for a solution.
As someone who is inherently lazy efficient, I'd think there is a way to do it that does not increase the workload for the owner... at least I'd spend a little more time looking for something that solves the root problem before I got harassed with e-mails - especially since I know a percentage of the people won't change whatever I set to get them going...
I disagree that the proper fix would be to not use domain forwarding. I own and manage a number of web sites nad each one costs money. Why should I spend money unecessarily for a small domain that is used just for a small dedicated forum?
Sorry, a small domain should not cost you more than the domain registration cost. Sure you can add it to an existing hosting package, if it's that small.
Well that might be the case but I've been bitten by some of the cheap hosting services so I'd rather stick with those I can trust for service and the facilities I need or like.
But surely that is not the point - which is to have Snitz work with domain forwarding. I've been away from this forum for over a year as I've been very ill, but fortunately now better and looking forward to a few more years of being able to use a variety of software. I decided to use Snitz for a new forum group as I had used it very successfully for many years prior to my illness, and I'd hoped to find the same level of support I previously enjoyed. Having got the new forum up and running and having members starting to come across to it I would much rather stick with Snitz than have to change horse in mid stream. So any postive ideas on how to address this present problem will be appreciated.
This now sends the email message to me. I can then reset the password to a default and email the original user with that. Just a small admin chore for me but I don't have too many users to worry about. Anyway - it works for me.
