I'm not sure whether this goes here or not, but here it is.
Can a Microsoft Access database be used on a Linux server? Does it require a certain program to run? If so, what is it?
I ask this because I'm trying to setup my computer so I can host my site on my own, and the best thing I've found to allow me to do that is on a Linux OS. I found a program that will supposedly allow me to run asp pages on it, but I can't find anything about Access databases.
If they can not be used on a Linux server, then does anyone know where I can find a good, detailed, beginner-friendly tutorial on setting up a MySQL database? As well as one for converting an Access database to a MySQL database? (or maybe I should use a plain SQL database, idk) |

We always recommend against trying to run ASP scripts on a Linux server as none of the components available offer a perfect implementation.

Microsoft Access was developed by Microsoft, so no, it can't be used on any linux flavor.
There is always the option of running windows inside linux, like a virtual windows, but to go through all that trouble to use an access database? I would just setup mysql and get it over with.
Or use windows. |

Ok, well does anyone know of some mostly free* programs for a server (FTP, Mail Client, Server Host (Apache http?), DNS, etc.) that I could get for Windows? I've been looking and looking, but have had no results (and frankly, I'm tired of all of these seemingly promising sites that once you get into it there's a hidden fee of some sort, lol) I live in a very bad area (economy-wise) and do not have a job and thus no money, which is why I want to continue using Snitz since this is one of the best ones I have found. Plenty of "breathing room" for modifying it and excellent support which most programs are really lacking in these days.
* = I know I have to pay for a domain name and Static IP and stuff, I'm just talking about the programs. |

When you buy a Windows Server Edition license, you get IIS (web host), FTP, Multimedia Streaming (as long as its Windows Media...), and a number of other server tools. For all the griping people do about the cost of a server license, you get a hell of a lot for your money. Also, Microsoft has launched a new initiative for sole-developers/startups. It may be worth looking at starting an LLC or something to get in on that. (I don't know if an LLC or any other type of incorporation is required, IIRC an LLC will help protect you should things go badly.)
Jeff Atwood posted something about the program either at StackOverflow.com or codinghorror.com - I can't remember which at the moment.
All things being equal, if you're short on cash you may want to look at an inexpensive shared hosting plan and go from there. It will be cheaper in the short run, and when you get to where you need more, you can look at how to finance more from there.
Discussions about hosting services are verboten here, so I won't make any recommendations or disparaging remarks about any particular company. Lifehacker.com ran a couple of articles recently on hosts, so check there for some recommendations and commentary. Just take all commentary with a grain of salt... not everyone is the expert they think they are. |
