Hello,
I am in a similar situation as someone else who posted on this board
very recently. I have been awarded the admin rights to our club BBS.
It is snitz 2000 version 3.4. I have managed to use the admin tools
to customize and understand the workings of the program. However,
most recently we have come under attack from spammers and spambots.
I know I need to update the version I have to the new but the
instructions are vague for a newbee. I'll also want to turn on
e-mail verification which is non-functional in our current version.
Our BBS has been around for about 6 years and we have a significant
amount of data. I am using dreamweaver. Thanks in advance for your
help and suggestions in advance. |

firstly forget dreamweaver, if you even so much as attempt to load the forum files into it, it will mangle them beyond recognition, you would be far better using notepad.
to upgrade, all you have to do is open config.asp and copy the database settings from your existing forum into the new config.asp, then upload all the forum files from the latest version, overwriting the files you currently have, then just open setup.asp in your browser and it will perform any database updates that may be required, and that's it.
If you have any MODS installed you will then need to reinstall them. |

Is dreamweaver ok to use to FTP into the server? Do you mean
"notepad" as in the little simple note pad that is in windows?

Might want to qualify that first bit Huw, If you work in "Code View" Dreamweaver's a good program... Its only when you try to use the WYSIWYG that it mangles everything. The code completion and syntax highlighting are decent - and line numbers are a newbie's friend. But that's another debate for another time.  |

| Yes, while dreamweaver's FTP client isn't the best, its ok to use when FTP'ing your files up to the server. I use it all the time. (MX at home, MX 2004 at work) |

OK, I found the little proggie Araneae to use instead of notepad,
now I have line numbers. Got a be a good thing for a newb. |

araneae is a good choice  for ftp you could just use explorer if you are running windows, or just download a free ftp client, there are lots of them about. If you use firefox as your browser try one of the free ftp plugins.
you ca't use IE as an ftp client so don't even try |

OK, I found the line and changed it. Removed the "'". I also chose
the corect DB type. I renamed the "snitz_forums_2000.mdb" as not to
overide my original file. So now I can upload the files? |

I updated the forum today and it appears to be working well
at this point. We have always had problems with leaving the forum
open to anyone to join and post. The previous version didn't do so
well. The only way to stop all the spam was to totally close it.
After the install I see we lost our AVITAR mod, which I think was
part of our problem. I would like to add some of the popular mods,
for a newb do you favor any other one over another?
I may be doing a forum boo-boo, but I'll edit my question if I should
start a new tread. I have upgrade my forum, but I only have basic
admin capabilities. The super admin has moved on and I have no idea
his password. I did some searching here on the website and thought
I found a few answers. No luck, the easiest seems to set the admin
to my member number. I tried the password reset and nothing happened. |

if you are not making any translation to the files to other languages, araneae is a good choice. I have been using dreamweaver though with translated files and I have had no problem with it. |

I looked through the config.asp 3 times and never found that line, Do
you had an idea around what line number it is? I tried downloading
a few programs to examine the DB to find my unique id to make
superAdmin and none of them worked. I also downloaded the password
reset.asp, When I open it though in dreamweaver all I see is code,
how do you "run" it? |
