Hello all,
I have inherited the Snitz2000 3.4 forum (a long story). This has not been upgraded since 2004 but has been working remarkably well. Yet, although I very much believe in "if it ain't broke don't fix it", time has come to bring it to next level.
I would like to:
- see usage statistics (PVs, UVs, etc.) - attach it to a email server - upgrade it to the latest version(?) - install AdSense code to hopefully cover some of the costs of maintenance - find a way to fight spammers other than having to forbid new registrations
Unfortunately, I know nothing about Access, SQL, servers, DNS and all that jazz. So I wonder if I should learn all that I do not know or find an expert who could it all for me. I believe that you are all experts, so there is probably no better place to ask this.
Some kind people have told me that I should switch to PHPBB and move all the data, but as they say, better the devil I know...
Thank you |

Most of what you are asking is not hard to achieve and there is code to do it, not that hard to add.
1. Statistics - probably adding Google analytics would be the way; 2. Not sure what you mean - attach to an email server. The purpose of that would be? 3. Someone changed your existing version id. If you do not have code modifications added, it's very simple to upgrade, but the worthiness of the upgrade can only be judged once we know your current version - you may need to apply several security fixes. 4. There are several examples of adding adsense and that can be done easily too. 5. Again, there are several options for that too.
All you ask is possible with some effort. If you have coding experience, it would be easy to do. If you don't, it's a matter of knowing whether you want to try it or ask for someone to help with it.
P.S.: I removed your link, no need to post it for now. |

Thanks Ruirib,
it all looks pretty straight forward. The email server thing is to be able to enable email confirmation for registrations. May be I could use a gmail account? What you think?
Could anybody on this community actually do it all for me? I could even pay a little money for the trouble.
Thanks |

Doesn't your hosting plan include an access to an email server?
There are members here who usually apply mods for a small payment. Maybe someone will offer for that purpose. |

Eric, email confirmations are frequently more painful than they ought to be thanks to spammers effectively ruining email for us all, so just be aware not all emails will get through (spam filtering), and you may have to fiddle around a bit to get SMTP working through your ISP. Alas, you can't just 'give it a gmail address', it's a bit more involved than that! |

Hello all, this is very goo9d advice thank you. I have come to the conclusion that I may be better off starting from scratch altogether with a new domain name even and transfer the databases (ACCESS) to the new platforms. Any other advice welcome. Cheers |

Hi Eric318,
If I were you, I'd take Rui up on that offer, it's quite an opportunity ;-) |
