is it a hard thing to mod to allow the use of an exclamation mark in usernames but disallow a period?

No, not hard. Find the validation functions and edit the string of disallowed characters. There's usually a good reason why certain characters are disallowed, but I'm not sure what the argument for '!' would be.

I would guess its because Access can use the "!" in SQL statements - i.e. [tablename]![fieldname]
