Hi all, here is the problem that I have...

I have a forum with approx 2000 members and my host has said that if I use the installed 'Email all members' they will close my hosting account due to 'unauthorised large volume email use' and 'possible spamming'...

How could I get around this (apart from chagning hosts) and are there any free or relatively cheap mail servers that I could use, and how should I set it up?

Thank you in advance.

With that mod there is the option to email only members A-F, G-M, etc...

What if you only mailed it in segments like that? Would your host still disapprove?

hi leatherlips, no, they will not let me do this either, the maximum amount is 100 per email send so even by doing like that i wouldnt be able to guarantee that it would be under 100 and to be honest dont need the greif off them!

pdrg, thanks for that info, has this been tested this on snitz forums? will it work? also, would this (http://www.authsmtp.com/faqs/faq-20.html) not affect me sending to just under 2000 members?

thanks for your help

1. You should press your host for fuller explanation. Would sending 1 email per day (= 30/month) violate their policy? Until you know precisely what their threshhold is, how can you determine your course of action?
2. 'unauthorised large volume email use' -- What volume IS authorized? Do they consider email to members spam?? What if you want to notify members of a planned interruption of service... how does host recommend you do this -- postal service?!!?
3. Point your outgoing email to another smtp server -- as opposed to using smtp on host's machine. Can you point the email to the smtp of your personal email account, for example??

Just some thoughts...

hi garyb

1)they will only allow 100 email recipients per email
2)if one person complains they will irreversably close my account down for spamming (even though they are members, but in fairness have not signed up to recevie periodical emails...)
3) this is exactly what i want to do with the above company, but was just wondering if anyone else had tried it, but as they offer free trial teste i'll go ahead and 'trial' test it!

thanks

Hmmmm it's a bind, and you're right about the item from the company's FAQ - maybe you can find another SMTP company - in *theory* you should be able to use them, but things are so locked-down ports-wise etc these days there are no guarantees.

Who can we thank? Those greedy b*****ds who make an average of 17 out of every 20 emails sent junk mail completely swamping legitimate mail 6 to 1. Makes me sick, I remember the lovely old internet back in the 90's where we all played nicely together before the bad kids came to town

What about 1 recipient for 2000 emails? Is the use of Distribution List(s) possible and would DL be of any benefit?

I have pointed my website at my personal email smtp server using CDONTS, but this was *not* in conjunction with a forum.

Other option is to hire SPAM company to disseminate the newsletter. They are not held to any standards!

Does it require authentication or a specific port number? If it does you'll need to edit inc_mail.asp in the appropriate area for the component you are using.

it requires authentication and ive unchecked these two lines in inc_mail.asp under cdosys:

Flds("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendusername") = "username"
Flds("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/sendpassword") = "password"

anything else?

Not to be insulting, but did you change the username and password to your actual username and password?

Do you have this line uncommented?

Flds("http://schemas.microsoft.com/cdo/configuration/smtpauthenticate") = 1 'cdoBasic
