As a "proof of concept" I have setup a Snitz forum on my XP workstation using IIS 5. Everything is running hunky dory, except I can't get e--mail working. We have an Exchange server I want all e-mail to go to, but whenever I send an e-mail via the forum it never arrives.

Where abouts should I be logging for debug information?

1) what email component have you set for the forum to use?
2)does your exchange server require SMTP authentication?

1) There was only one option, which was CDOSYS.

2) It allows anonymous authentication.

I suspect the problem will be setting up the SMTP element of IIS. All I've done is install it, I don't know what configuration I should be doing, if any. Does the forum bypass the IIS SMTP component, or does all mail to external servers route through that?

You do not need IIS SMTP installed to use CDOSYS. It supports authentication if you did need to use a non local mail server.

Podge, I am new to Snitz Forums, and am having the exact same problem as described above. I do not know anything about CDOSYS. At the end of your last post you stated that it supported authentication. Is there a setting that you have to turn on, or change for this to work???

Ruirib, that does not fix my problem or answer my question. The only part of that forum that applies is the top half. I changed the username and password in the inc_mail.asp file and uncommented just like it said in that forum. Still same issue?? I am obviously still missing something??

Ruirib, I should also add that when I send mail (It dosen't matter if it is "send topic to a friend" etc...) I don't get any errors. In fact it tells me that the E-mail message has been sent.

Maybe you should check with your host to find out if they have some demo code to use email...

Ruitib, I am my own host. I host my on web and e-mail server. The e-mail server is Exchange 2003. This is why I think that I am just missing something, but because I am so new to Snitz forums, I can't pin down exactly what it is. Do you have any more ideas???

Unfortanely I don't know Exchange 2003, so don't know what else to suggest.

Ruirib, I understand, and thank you for all your suggestions. Maybe if you could tell me a little more of how the e-mail process works for Snitz. For example, I gather from what I read that it is using SMTP to authenticate. Is this correct? Why do I have only on e-mail option in Admin Options? Also if I did not mention above I am using the Access Database.

Justin,

The code does not use authentication by default. The changes described in the linked post add authentication to CDOSYS.

To use email, Snitz requires you to choose an email component, from the list of email components available on your server. Then specify the address of an email server, an email address valid for that server and that's all that is required. The database is not relevant, email wise.

Ruirib, the forum does not have to be on the e-mail server correct? I currently have the forum on my webserver, for security purposes I would prefer not to have it on my e-mail server...

No, it does not. You just need to specify the email server address in Admin Options->Email Server Configuration
