I need to block the entire range of 213.0.0.0 - 213.255.255.255. IPGate won't let me enter 213. so I either have to enter all 256 subnets, or try something else. I tried entering 213.0.0.0 - 213.255.255.255 and it accepted it. But I don't know if that really works. Does it?
Any other suggestions?
Thanks in advance. BB |

It did not work. The troublemakers are coming in on random IP addresses throughout the 213. range. So I have to enter in all 256 sub-ranges for 213. by hand? There's got to be an easier way to do this. |

You run the risk of blocking legitimate users... Why not blocking usernames instead? If you set email validation On and Restrict Registration On, they you can approve all new registrants, which will allow you to control the troublemakers. |

Thanks for the replies, but there three issues with your suggestions:
1. Email validation has a big problem. SNITZ email is automated and we are finding many email filters out there see it as spam - resulting in the users never getting the validation mail. We had to shut down email validation for that reason.
2. We really don't care to outreach to users in the RIPE Network ranges. They are mostly European and Russian, and we're not outreaching to those markets.
3. The user names are random gobledeegook, clearly being generated by a random generator. As soon as one username is blocked, a new one signs up.
The spam is almost always coming from RIPE NNC ranges. Example: 80. 81. 82. 83. 84. 85. 86. 87. 88. 193. 194. 195. 199. 203. 204. 212. 213. 217.
We really don't care about these ranges. They are simply not the markets we are targeting. So, any suggestions on how to block these would be greatly appreciated.
In the meantime, I'm going through and entering 256 IPGate entries for each. Hands are getting tired.
Is there perhaps a way to export the MySQL to Excel, use Excel's auto-numbering feature to create the subnets, and then import back into MySQL? |

Why not try one of the other anti-spam measures? Like making the birthday and/or other atypical fields required, or adding a CAPTCHA, or the gateway question?
I ask because while that IP range may not be in your "target area" that doesn't necessarily mean that your customers won't connect from one of those IPs. Some people go on a "holiday" or a business trip... |

Addendum: We found a mod called Anti-Spam Registration that prompts the user to type letters/numbers that appear in a GIF image. Very cool. http://www.snitzbitz.com/mods/details.asp?Version=All&mid=139
We think this will do it. Still, it would be nice to block the ranges that were mentioned.
Thanks for the replies. |

Oh! Please don't take offense. We love Italy.
We just aren't outreaching to that market right now, that's all.
BTW: I found a better mod than the one I mentioned. The ASPCAPTCHA makes more sense. AnonJR mentioned using a CAPTCHA earlier and I missed it. Thanks for the tip. |

Not a problem. I've been meaning to collate all the anti-spam options into one big reference to make finding all the relavent information easier, I just haven't had the time. |
