I inherited 3.3.03 from someone who is no longer available for info. I attempted to upgrade to the latest version of Snitz -- the client likes all the new features so I have a few questions.

Can I upgrade directly from 3.3.03 to the currnt version?

If so is there something I can do to unlock my sql 7 database without driving my host insane?

Yes, direct upgrade is possible. Be sure to delete all the current version files before uploading the new version ones. In no circumstance should you upload 3.4.x files over 3.3.x ones.

I failed to understand the unlock database question. What did you mean?

Note that if the previous administrator had installed any mods or otherwise tweaked the code, those changes will be lost in the upgrade and you will have to reapply them. Also, be sure to take a backup of the existing files & database, just in case something goes awry.

Re database unlock - I'm guessing the 'inherited' may have happenned when somebody 'moved on' very quickly, and the username and password may be lost somewhere? Is that the case? Either way it's a job for your DBA.
