I guess I am a dummy so I should apologize but hey I am doing the best I can. I manage a forum named http://yourdiabeticcat.com/forums/default.asp that myself and a VET donate time for people with diabetic cats that need help to cure them. We have no ads and no profit. The hosting is donated to us.

I am not much of a programmer but I added a few mods. I added Active users lite, google analytics, and basic statistics mod plus some visual stuff in the way of the login and some different gifs. Also added iespell.

I read the help files and I downloaded the changes only zip. strConnString and uncommented strDBType = "access".

I am at a hosting provider so I have access like anyone would with low end shared account. I do not want to wreck the forums but I am getting a lot of mail bounces by AOL and I am hoping the upgrade is somehow related to why AOL has decided that our headers appear like spam to them. It could be because the doc is subscribed to the whole forum and gets an email every few minutes but that seems far fetched.

My question is If I decide to go with the full upgrade method exactly what do I do. I read the info which I also posted below. I went to my forum/setup.asp. Do I copy the new files over my current files first then run this? If so where does it say that?

I am really confused. I just want to upgrade to 3.406 so I can continue on my merry way.

Is there instructions for those who can no longer think straight??

HELP DOUG

============\================

Upgrade Instructions
NOTE: It is recommended that you backup your database before you upgrade.

To upgrade your forum you will need to modify your connection string to point to your backup copy of the database you want upgrade.

Go to the setup.asp file in your forum directory.
Ex.: http://<yourservername>/<forumdirectoryname>/setup.asp

Follow the instructions to upgrade your database to the current version. Upgrade of the database is supported from Snitz Forums Version 3.0 Release Candidate 1 and later.

Please note that when upgrading your forum, you will have to re-install any mods you previously added to your forum.

After the upgrade has been completed, log into your Admin Options and click the Update Forum Counts link to complete the upgrade.

Firstly, the AOL bounces have nothing to do with your forum, it's simply down to the fact that AOL are gits and deal with spam completely arseways!

As for the upgrade, these are the steps I follow.

01. Copy your current database and all your forum files to a new directory on your server; we're going to run the upgrade here first so that you can reapply your mods and test that everything is working alright. Also, take a second backup locally just in case you mess anything up and need to revert back to a previous version of a file.

02. Download the zip containing the updated files for v3.4.06, edit config.asp to point to your test database and upload all the files in the zip to your test directory.

03. Run setup.asp on your test forum.

04. Go through the readmes of the mods you already have installed and reapply the changes they require to any of the files you uploaded in step 2 and upload the edited files. Where, possible, I'd recommend you do this one mod at a time so that you can test each one individually to ensure it's working. Note also, that you may encounter some minor problems with the code changes due to line numbers and code changing between versions. If you do, first check that there isn't an updated version of the mod available for v3.4.06 (you may have to run the dbs again, if there is) and then ask for help in the MOD Implementation forum if you're still having problems.

05. Once all that is done take a bit of time to test everything is working as it should - get some of your admins and moderators to help out in case you miss anything.

06. When you're happy that all is in order, shut down your live forums.

07. Edit config.asp in your test forum to point to your real database and copy all the files, except the database, from you test forum's directory to your live forum.

08. Run setup.asp in your live forum as well as any dbs files from step 4.

09. Open your forums back up and enjoy v3.4.06.

One more thing. How do I make that signature link back to snitz stats.

I am thinking that copying the forum and database to a new directory may not work at this host. I say that only because they have a specific directory for the DB and I am sure that is because of access rights to write to the db. If I put it elsewhere I do not believe it will work properly (But believe me I may not know what I am talking about at all here!!!)

Anyway on my local I have a working copy of the forums with exact same directory structure as the live forum. I just tested a forum compactdb (ACCESS) which I cannot do on the live site cause it fails repeatedly and since this is a donated site (remember for sick cats to help the people cure them) I do not have much I can say. Anyway locally the compact works fine.

So after all that babbling my point is what do you think about me doing all that work locally, set it all up, test it best I can (I have no other admins etc) and then if it works backup up the live and stop it take a copy of the live database locally and again run it through setup locally (and compact it first as well) and then just copy all of that over the current files and cross my fingers. If it all fails I just need to copy everything back exact as it was before I stopped it. But there is no reason at all for it to fail since I am using the same config.asp locally and it works (once I gave write access to all users in the db directory).

Any reason why this should not work?

Thanks for your help of course!!! All those felines appreciate it.

Doug

The option to do it locally has nothing wrong with it, quite the contrary. That's what I usually do. Probably the connection string is different, but once you get it all to work, you just need to change it to use the one you now have at your site.
