im once again concerned with board performance. to bring you up to date, i tried to switch over the mysql but couldnt get the latest release of mysql to play nice with windows, and i dont want to lose all the content in the access database anyway. when i archived my board it helped a lot, but now i have a scoundrel doing redundant archive searching to purposefully bring my board to a halt. i disabled searching, but if users cant search my archives then they may as well not even be there anymore. im currently running on a dedicated server in a datacenter with a 1.4 gig processor and 512 megs of ram. i plan to build an undated server and host out of my home on a 3mbps upstream commercial cable connection. as i prepare to buy parts for my server, im wondering just how much hardware i need in order to enable archive searching without bringing the rest of the board to a complete stop until the searching is completed. when i host local ill be running on windows 2000 server (since i have a copy thats paid for) utilizing the existing access database. i want to build a server thats fast enough for reasonable demands both today and tomorrow without spending more than is necessary.
......so, what processor is necessary to enable searching while still serving pages? how much ram is necessary? thanks, |

well, searching your database should not really affect the performance of the rest of the forum.
How big is your database ? how many concurrent users do you get ? any idea how much of your 512Mb is being used by your website ?
How much do you want to spend ? |

it brings the rest of the forum to a halt. in fact i have a half dozen or so forums on the same server (only 1 is busy though) and you cannot browse any of the pages from any of the forums during an archive search of my main forum.

the database is currently 102 megs, and i also have a *.bak file (dont recall where it came from) that i believe is a backup of my db at 163 megs.

it varies but this isnt an issue. i can log into the site at 4am when nobody else is on and it still brings the rest of the forum to a halt during archive searching.

only as much as i have to in order to get the performance im looking for, which is why im asking what the recommended requirements would be. i suppose i could build a multi-processor machine, but dont want to if i dont have to.

I'd also recommend restricting the search to members only to prevent this person from using it.

Search is your friend “I was having a mildly paranoid day, mostly due to the fact that the mad priest lady from over the river had taken to nailing weasels to my front door again.” |

basically your problem is most likely access and a lack of ram. when you say you couldn't get mysql to work, what problems were you having ? it should work fine with windows, and you also shouldn't lose any of your existing content when moving |

There's a very well written guide stickied in the MySQL forum here which should be of use to you.
