Sorry to ask this as it seems to be covered but I just do not get it 100%.

I backup the DB first.

Then I select a forum and select a time period and archive.

Are those topics still accessible now that they are archived? What happens if someone wants to see them.

Does archiving improve performance (after compacting). If not why do it?

The topics are accessible through a specific icon in default.asp and forum.asp.
Archiving does improve performance, that's why it should be done.

Yes I see now on the Snitz forum.

What would you suggest as a good length of time or number of posts of both on the avergae using an ACCESS database?

I would say that you need to monitor the way the forum responds. When it starts getting slower, go and compact a bit...
