with all the troubles ive been having with mysql, i decided to try to archive the forum before investing more time with mysql (either way its something i need to learn, but at least the "pressure" is off).
my board is indeed much faster as my db went from 70 megs to 160k, but im wondering where did the 69.8 megs go? i can still search and read the archives, i just cant seem to find where the 69 meg file is hiding. thanks, |

i dont recall how many posts there were. before selecting the archive function my .mdb was just over 70 megs, and afterwards the .mdb was 163k. i can still search the archives, i just cant find the 69 meg file. |

I find that very weird. Archiving won't reduce the file size, in fact it will increase it, unless you then compact the database. Also, I have never seen such a huge size reduction. |

i stand corrected. in my haste i mistook 163 megs for 163k.
ok, so if the db gets larger, what happens that makes the board run faster after archiving? |

The tables were the live topics and replies are located get smaller.
You should compact the database, it will get back to the 70 MB size, maybe even smaller. Backup the .mdb file before you do. |

what does compacting the db do to server performance? what exactly happens when you compact it? |

When you delete an object like a table, it doesn't get completely deleted ... compacting an Access database gets rid of any items that have been "deleted" but not removed. (amongst other things)
The long and short of it is that compacting an Access Database will increase performance and should generally be done after archiving. |

thanks for the info. can this be done during normal board functions, or should the board be shut down before attempting to compact it?
