I have concerns about the access database being able to handle large numbers of posts. has anyone actually had their forum outgrow an access database?
if not, is anyone operating a very large forum and the access db is still working fast and well? |

The terms "Fast" and "grow well" aren't usually found in the same sentence as Access...
In truth, Access isn't the best for a large and/or well-trafficked web site. Having said that, with some care and thought you can take Access quite far. Eventually though, you will outgrow Access unless your traffic is a trickle.
Again, due to the large number of variables its hard to give concrete figures. |

Yes I was on Access and had to move on. I chose SQL Server, although for personal reasons I wish I had chosen mySQL. |

A busy forum will eventually outgrow Access. How soon will that occur? Depends on the number of posts and the number of users simultaneously online. If you are expecting many simultaneous users online, Access may not be able to handle it at all, regardless of DB size. |

Thanks everyone for the replies. It should be fine for now while my forum is just in its baby stages.
Has anyone here made a conversion at any point? IE: was using access, outgrew it, and propped all of their data to a faster/better DB format? |

There are many posts covering such conversions in the MySQL & MSSQL forums.

I was on Access for a good few years. It was only this year that my host pulled the plug for me taking up too many file handles. Around this time, I was starting to experience all manner of record locking and timeout issues. The size of my database was over 200MB and I therefore had to move to MySQL. It's been wonderful ever since |
