Maybe I should post this in the kids section...

But just how big does a forum get on anyone's server?

And how much traffic & bandwidth for a reasonably busy one?

And just how long is a piece of string?

Start with a basic hosting package. You will soon find out whether it fits your needs or not. If not, your host will allow an upgrade of the hosting package. I wouldn't worry too much.

Thanks, but no I'm not worried, just curious. I imagine the database is actually very small, and only the very large sites have a huge bandwidth, but I thought someone might give me some figures. I'm sure other newbies might now be curious too.

Cheers.

The standard code is only a few megs.
My SQLDB is growing with approx. 10-15MB/year(100+ users, fairly busy). Same goes for other DB's i suppose, as its mostly text.

A 100MB hosting solution should set you up just fine (if you can find one that small )
Except if you plan on running a graphics-show-off-forum!

Bandwidth is not a concern, if you are planning a 'normal' forum.

Thanks, that's useful.

Actually it's a film / video forum, but using the new tags provided by Marcel, Podge et al won't use any bandwidth at all will it? That's how I plan to have a video based forum with low bandwidth requirements.

Even graphics can be held on another server.

I think Karel Bata was intending for the users to find their own space to host the video...

That's correct. It's a site for UK filmaker's. A lot are savvy enough to have found their own web space, but there will also be a forum for newbies to help them find a host and upload their films. At the moment many small independants have sites of their own but are unconnected, and often relatively unknown. I'm hoping to bring them together and form more of a community.

hmmm film makers forum, well I have ran my site for 3 years now, right now we are at about 13,500 members and have files for download and what not the forum and track files alone eat up towards 1,300 gigabytes of bandwidth a month. The videos on the site eat up another 3,000+ gigabytes a month and this is in the slow part of the year so yeah video hosting can get out of your affordable range and will definately sent you dedicated quickly if you become popular.
