If yes, how can gZip be set?

gzip? Isn't that related to an Apache server or something to do with the php scripting language?

If your on W2003, its built in by default, you just need to enable it. What platform are you on ? W2000, NT or W2003 ?

gZip is a compression algorithm commonly used by servers to compress data before sending it to a clients browser.

Podge,
SERVER_SOFTWARE=Microsoft-IIS/6.0
HTTP_ACCEPT_ENCODING=gzip, deflate
I think that it can unGzip (as all Windows, it has got IE, which is enabled to do it), but whether it is enabled to gzip? I am not sure. Do I need to add any script to the ASP pages of the forum so as to the output would be gziped?

This page will tell you if its enabled on your server - http://www.whatsmyip.org/mod_gzip_test/
Just enter a page from your forum or website and it will let you know the results.

You do not need to include anything on your asp pages, its all done via IIS.

Last I checked, Snitz forums still had refresh issue's with compression enabled though, they tend just not to refresh the page properly without the user having to force one via CTRL+F5

I haven't had that problem and I've had compression enabled for over a year. The refresh issue sound more like a problem with server or client side caching to me.

Happened on I think every W2K Server we enabled it on no matter what we tried to circumvent it, in fact a good few people reported via the forums here that they had experienced the issue themselves as well, certainly wasn't just limited to me it was quite consistently reproduceable .. might be ok on W2K3 .. I'm not saying it was a Snitz issue, most likely in fact an IIS issue (or combination of both).

If you were on W2K then you would have had to be using a third party gzip isapi filter (there are a few around - Port80, TurboIIS, etc.). From my experience, the inbuilt compression in IIS6 doesn't have any such issues though its far from easy to set up.

Port80 has the best one.

I guess this is something I ought to contact my host about since I could effectively double my speed acording to Port80...

Very useful information about gZip and IIS6.0 at here and over there of IIS5.0
To my regret at the server where my site is hosted gZip for dynamic files (ASP) is off (think they there simply left the default level compression = 0) ((((

W2K/IIS5 Has it built in, no need for additional filters, you might have been showing your age and thinking NT4?
