Hi there
As a test I've copied the access.mdb data base + forum folder from my old website to a new one + reconfigured the string properties so it point to the database in the new website.
I've copied the database into the cgi-bin which is located outside the root of the website.
It is showing up fine on the default page + I can see all the forum pages ok however if I click on a topic or try to login I get the following error message...
"Internal Server Error
The server encountered an internal error or misconfiguration and was unable to complete your request. Please contact the server administrator to inform of the time the error occurred and of anything you might have done that may have caused the error.
More information about this error may be available in the server error log."
Any ideas why this may be happening?

First of all I would suggest you turn off Friendly HTTP Errors in your IE settings Advanced Tab.
Most likely, you'll then see a more detailed error message, and I'd hesitate a guess that you'll see an 80004005 error which will probably indicate that the cgi-bin folder you have the database in doesn't isn't writable by the webserver or possibly you have the path to the database set incorrectly in config.asp |

Hiya Gremlin
I'm assuming the path to the database is correct as I can see the .default page fine.
Re: the cgi-bin - is it not set to read/write as default on a server or would I need to change permissions?
I was reading through the Snitz installation guide + it advises to install into a folder which has read/write permissions enabled which included the cgi-bin

It comes down to how your host sets their default permissions, many, will have cgi-bin writeable by default, however others won't, yours may fall into the latter category.
Make sure you turn off friendly errors so you can get the full message (assuming your using IE). You can also check your folder permissions using an FTP client usually that should tell you fairly quickly if it's got the full write access required by Snitz. |

You're welcome, if that doesn't help sort things out then check your website logs for any further information on the error and post what you can back here, someone should be able to help you try and make sense of it all :) |

Will do.
I'm just awaiting a response from my server provider regarding changing permissions.
Their interface is Plesk 7.5 for Windows + the options for changing permissions for the cgi-bin are greyed out.
I've been scratching my head on how to change permissions using this interface for a few days now.
Very little help so far from them via email response.

Plesk for Windows was in my experience a little buggy, must admit I gave up on it around 7.1 so it may be a lot better now a few point releases on :)
If you can't change those permissions, simply create a new directory at the same level as your your root www folder and see if you can set the permissions, if you can, then use this folder for your database instead, the recommendation to put your DB in the cgi-bin, is nothing more than that, just a recommendation not a requirement. |

Well here are the instructions for changing permissions in Plesk 7.5 + I can't get my head around them at all. Has anyone used Plesk successfully to change permissions of a folder? I've created a new folder in the root + still can't figure it out reading through the instructions below....
Viewing, Setting, Changing and Removing Access Permissions for Files and Folders
Plesk provides setting up file and folder permissions, including defining special permissions and permissions inheritance, similarly to the way it is presented in Windows interface.
Note: For security reasons, permissions for Administrators, SYSTEM and Plesk Domain User cannot be changed or removed.
To remove permissions set for a group or user, select the required name in the Group or user names list and click the "-" icon next to it.
Note: The "-" icons appear unavailable for entries with permissions inherited from a parent object. To remove such permission entry,
select the entry clear the Allow inheritable permissions from the parent to propagate to this object and all child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here check box select the entry again and click the "-" icon.
To set, change or remove permissions from a group or user:
To change or remove permissions from a group or user, click the required name in the Group or user names list.
To set permissions for a group or user, which is not in the Group or user names list, select the required user/group name from the drop-down box located above the list and click the "+" icon: the user/group appears in the list. Select it.
To allow or deny permissions to a selected group/user, select the Allow or Deny check boxes corresponding to permissions listed under Permissions for user/group name.
Note: If check boxes in Allow and/or Deny columns are shaded, it means that the corresponding permissions are inherited from a parent folder.
To deny the permission, which are inherited from a parent object as allowed, select the required check boxes under Deny. This will override inherited permissions for this file/folder.
To allow the permission, which are inherited from a parent object as denied, clear the Allow inheritable permissions from the parent to propagate to this object and all child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here check box: this removes the inherited permissions. Then select the required check boxes under Allow and Deny.
To set up permissions inheritance:
To make the file/folder inherit permissions from a parent folder (if it does not), select the Allow inheritable permissions from the parent to propagate to this object and all child objects. Include these with entries explicitly defined here check box.
To make the files and folders, which are contained in this folder, inherit the folder permissions defined here, select the Replace permission entries on all child objects with entries shown here that apply to child objects check box.
To submit all changes made to the file/folder permissions, click OK. To view the information on the parent folder, from which this file/folder inherits permissions, click Advanced.
For advanced permissions inheritance management, click Advanced. Note: Clicking Advanced does not submit changes made to permissions on this page, meaning that the changes are not saved, but trasnferred to the next page.

Another quick option could be to enable frontpage extensions on your site, then place your DB in the _PRIVATE folder which should normally have write access enabled once Frontpage has been enabled from memory. |
