Hello, I am using ASP.NET (VB.NET) on my website. I have been looking for a great forum to use on my site. I was wondering if this forum is available in ASP.NET and if not, would there be be one and when ?
Thanks

Dayve I assume by the links you sent me, means that there is no plans to make this asp.net. and that those are the ones I should be looking at.
Thanks

Both CommunityServer and CoreBoard are closed source. CoreBoard has not seen an update since August 2004 and CommunityServer does not have some of the cool features such as automatic login with NTLM unless you shell out a couple of thousand on licensing. |

sorry to say Podge, what they have on the site is incomplete information to say the least, CommunityServer is neither opensource nor free from what I can see:
"CommunityServer Express Edition is distributed free of charge and The Express Edition of Community Server is recommended for organizations or individuals that want to quickly and easily (on a budget) create a community site. It includes fully functional blogs, forums, and photo gallery tools. However, it is limited in that add-ons cannot be used and it has a required “Power By” advertisement in the footer of every page."
=> Free of charge with NO mod addons (requires commercial key-license)
"Is the source code available for Community Server? Yes, the source code for Community Server is available. While, it includes the core source code for Community Server it does not include source code for included add-on modules or 3rd party software libraries."
Source code was published because they decided to, it's their -fair-decision to make, but we could not ask for it even willing, and it containes dlls without source, includes also an ms dll with full eula which restricts the license even more.
Furthermore "3. DESCRIPTION OF OTHER RIGHTS AND LIMITATIONS. 3g. Distribution. You may not distribute this product, or any portion thereof, or any derived work thereof, to anyone outside your organization. You are not allowed to combine or distribute the Software with other software that is licensed under terms that seek to require that the Software (or any intellectual property in it) be provided in source code form, licensed to others to allow the creation or distribution of derivative works, or distributed without charge."
=> no open source whatsoever
I love free software, doesn't matter if free of charge or commercially available; although I do understand as a coder I need money to eat (at least) what really impressed me was 'incomplete' not to say 'misleading' information on that site...
The complete CS license and ms eula is in the downloads CS license guide http://communityserver.org/files/40/licensing/entry513585.aspx open source definition http://www.opensource.org/docs/definition.php
was this a rant? YES! best regards, |

What they are talking about is that the free version does not come with their commercial addons. There is nothing stopping you from adding any of these mods which have been written by members of the community - http://communityserver.org/forums/161/ShowForum.aspx
Telligent have licencing deals with (and own) a few dotnet component vendors which is why they are used and included with the source.
I will concede that its not Open Source in the strictest sense of the word but you can download the source, customize it, extend it, compile it and then deploy it as long as you keep the link. The free version is overkill for most situations and is not as hard to setup as you would think.
In your original question you didn't ask for an Open Source forum but you may find one here - http://www.411asp.net/home/webapps/forum |
