I have searched around and discovered that an Access DB will only support so many users at one time. Does anyone have any idea on how many users can be supported?

Search around a little more and you will that really depends on the server, on how much memory it has, on the hardware it runs, on the overall web server load and such... No easy answers...

Cheers Rui. I'm in the archives now
I think I'm ok for now - 42 of 69 Members have made 1377 posts in 18 forums. Just thinking if I need to do the upgrade may be best to get it done sooner rather than later.
Whilst on the subject, both SQL DB's have to be paid for right?

Many hosting packages include MySQL. SQL Server is usually more expensive, though some packages include it too.

My current host is £199 per year for 100mb SQL although they don't state whether MS or MY!
They have been good so far as I had really bad site access over the weekend. Email sent to support and it was fixed within an hour. Someone abusing bandwidthDidn't expect a reply till monday morning.
On page 12 of 65 in the archives Seems it does vary a lot but on my current forum it's only 2mb so i think it seems quite low.

For that price probably MS. Easy to upgrade when required.

Did you see the price? Out of my budget I'm afraid.

You probably would need to find another host, maybe with MySQL included in the hosting package.

Most hosts will probably just charge you a set up fee to enable SQL and add it to your existing package, at no extra cost. Well mine will........ I just read their blurb on it.

I am currently running with an access database which is 8Meg in size. I only have 70 forum members at present, but it is a specialised forum. Never had any problems with concurrent connections, but then again my maximum has only ever been 15.

Hope these figures help.

Thanks all for the replies. I've gained another 2 members. The subject of my forum could mean it's going to get really busy or it could just plod along. I'm not sure which way it's going to go but we will have to wait and see.

I'm gonna stick with access for now and do my regular archiving and pruning to keep things in order. Maybe use it as a test to see how much stick access can take.

Slightly off topic but still access. Could I edit deleted members directly in the DB from n/a's to Deleted Member without causing havoc? They still seem to show in the members list

I'd have to concur with that. On my public forum, which is Access-based, we top out at about 6 or 7 concurrent users and haven't had a glitch. On the work forum, behind the firewall, we get a lot more and have had various problems.

My host just added MS-SQL to all its packages to stay competitive and I've been thinking of upgrading now when I've only got a small number of users to worry about interrupting, instead of waiting until I need to upgrade...

HTH.

Most active users so far was 9 with no problems. I also get hit by spiders quite often. MS has been in and I turn up on page 1 of MSN search without submitting?

Please ignore the deleting of members found I can edit the in their profile or delete them if all their post's are deleted.
